Hello! I’m Liz Climo, an author, illustrator, and animator with a background in working on The Simpsons. I also create a webcomic on Instagram that features animals navigating social situations in a light-hearted and charming way. My latest book, You’re Loved, is a continuation of these comics but focuses on baby animals and their adoring grown-ups. It serves as a gentle reminder that even when life feels overwhelming, love is always present. Join me as I share the journey of creating this book!
The Journey of Creation
Starting a new project can be daunting, and this one was no different. I aimed for a powerful image—something heartwarming that also reflects the vastness of the world from a baby’s perspective. I wanted the turtle on the first page to gaze directly at the reader, and it took several attempts to nail the right expression. I’m thrilled with the final result; the baby seems to connect with you while also looking a bit confused.
I fondly remember taking my daughter outside often when she was a baby; it was a surefire way to soothe her when she was fussy. I used to marvel at her adorable face, convinced she was the most perfect baby ever. Now that she’s eight, I can look back at those early photos and admit she was, like many newborns, a delightful little tornado of chaos (but still my perfect chaos).
Parenting Challenges
One challenge every parent knows too well is getting kids to eat. We worked hard to introduce our daughter to a variety of foods from a young age—taking her to restaurants and ordering from the adult menu instead of the kid’s. Now, after all that effort, her favorite meals consist of “deep-fried dinosaur shapes” and “anything beige with melted cheese.” Nevertheless, this illustration is among my favorites in the book because it captures those early, chaotic years perfectly (we even had that high chair!).
For me, the toughest part of being a new parent was the lack of sleep. While I cherish a good night’s rest, my little one had other plans. She seemed to avoid sleep as if it were a personal challenge. I remember peering at our video baby monitor, praying for a peaceful scene but often met with two wide-open eyes staring back at me. This illustration reflects those long, sleepless nights.
Character Reflections
The fennec fox parent in the book embodies my personality. I am not one to take risks; I tend to worry and anticipate the worst. Part of my parenting journey has involved learning to let go of those fears and allow my child the freedom to explore. The character’s transformation from a worrywart to an enthusiastic cheerleader mirrors my growth as a parent. My daughter, although she hasn’t tried skateboarding yet, loves new experiences and has become quite adept at roller skating. Naturally, I equipped her with every safety gear imaginable.
This illustration holds a special place in my heart. A year ago, I lost a dear friend, Alex, and I dedicated this book to him and his three children. I wanted to create a character that represents his youngest son, Milo, who is this adorable little hedgehog. Alex was one of the kindest souls I ever met, making everyone feel safe and loved. My hope is that this book captures a bit of that essence.
