It’s baffling how something designed for small children can take up so much space! I find myself pondering this at least ten times a day. Whether I’m stubbing my toe on the bathroom stool, relocating a little table to vacuum, or just trying to figure out where to stash all this kid furniture, it always seems to be tiny yet overwhelmingly large at the same time.
I thought transitioning out of the baby phase would simplify things. After saying goodbye to swings, cradles, and play saucers, I believed I’d finally have more space. But I was mistaken.
Even after clearing out all those items, my ultimate foe remained: the high chair. I can’t navigate a single day without tripping over its legs, snagging my pocket on it, or having to shuffle it aside just to pass through the kitchen with laundry baskets. It’s been here for two years, and I should be accustomed to it by now.
It’s a standard high chair, but when you’ve spent two years trying to figure out where to put it, it starts to feel gigantic. When I chose this model that semi-folds up, I thought I had made a smart decision for our open-plan home. The baby would eat, and I’d fold it up and tuck it away. Simple, right?
But I was pregnant and perhaps a bit dazzled by the charm of this rose gold high chair. I didn’t really consider that our “dining area” is just a corner of a larger living space. There’s nowhere to tuck this thing unless I eliminate my beloved buffet, which I’m not willing to sacrifice for a piece of furniture that will (hopefully) only be around for another year or so.
My daughter is now two years old. Some kids can sit at the table with the family by this age, but my little one is a different story. She may be in the 3rd percentile for size but is definitely over the 97th for mischief. Trust me, the high chair is still essential in our household.
