I absolutely adore Valentine’s Day. The chance to celebrate love fills me with joy. I’m not interested in hearing from those who criticize the holiday for being commercialized or insist that we should express love year-round; let me enjoy my hearts and roses without the negativity.
I revel in heart-shaped candies, quirky decorations, cliché gifts, and special date nights. I’ll seize every opportunity to celebrate Love Day!
My husband, my one and only Valentine since I was 18, is currently deployed. I can’t disclose when he left, where he is, or when he will return. All I can say is that he’s far away, has been gone too long, and I miss him dearly. This Valentine’s season amplifies my longing for him and the celebrations he usually organizes because he knows how much I cherish this holiday.
However, not having a romantic date or dancing to our wedding song doesn’t mean I have to forgo one of my favorite holidays. This year, it’s just me and the kids at home for Valentine’s Day, so I’m turning the occasion into a family celebration. I’m pouring my Valentine spirit into creating a joyful day for my little ones.
Crafting Fun
Since my husband left, I’ve discovered a passion for crafting. I recently acquired a secondhand Cricut machine from a friend, and I’ve fallen in love with it. I’m designing cute shirts for my kids to wear during our special dinner, with the word “loved” printed on them so they can wear them again.
Delicious Dinner
For dinner, I’m whipping up their favorite meal: breakfast! They’ll indulge in bacon and eggs, along with heart-shaped waffles topped with strawberries, whipped cream, and sprinkles.
Thoughtful Gifts
I’m not going overboard on gifts, but I’m buying each of them a few special items to make their day memorable and to show them that I care about their interests. I came across a wonderful idea on Pinterest where a mom writes little love notes to her children on heart-shaped paper and tapes them to their bedroom doors from February 1st until Valentine’s Day. I love that concept.
We even went to the craft store together to pick out supplies to decorate their Valentine Boxes for school. Usually, I keep it simple, but this year we’re going all out. The Valentine’s they share with their classmates will match their box themes.
I’ll also encourage them to write Valentine letters to their grandparents. And of course, we are sending a care package to their dad so he feels loved. Even though he’s far away, we want to remind him that he is always in our hearts (even if Valentine’s Day is more my thing than his).
Just because my romantic love is miles away, it doesn’t mean I can’t have a little Cupid-themed fun with my three favorite people!
