There was a time when I loved sharing a bed with my partner. I cherished those cozy moments when we’d snuggle before drifting off to our respective sides of the mattress. Falling asleep next to him was effortless; I’m a heavy sleeper, after all.
But now, one thing is robbing me of my rest, and it’s driving me to the brink: My partner’s snoring. The sounds that escape from his mouth and nose have started to impact our relationship. I’m frequently sleep-deprived and cranky the next day. When he asks how I slept, I can’t help but give him the look. You know the one—the look that says, “You kept me awake again, even from across the house.” And then he’s there, genuinely responding, “I didn’t sleep well either.”
This wasn’t always the case. When we first met, he rarely snored unless he had a few drinks, and even then, it was nothing like the thunderous noises that erupt from him now. I’ve tried everything: snore strips, earplugs, nasal strips, suggesting he elevate his head with an extra pillow, and even nudging him when he snores (as he requested). Now, we’ve resorted to sleeping in separate bedrooms because I fear I might lose my cool in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately, I can still hear him from the other room, and I’m fed up with being the one who has to relocate. I’ve attempted to wake him during his noisy episodes (again, at his request), but he always asks for another chance. At that point, it’s just simpler to move to another room.
His sleeping position doesn’t help either; he’s a stomach sleeper, and the combination of snoring from both his mouth and nose is unbearable. I’m no doctor, but sometimes it sounds like he stops breathing for a few seconds, and his body jerks. I’ve heard this could indicate sleep apnea, but he insists he “doesn’t have that.”
So, what’s my next step? I guess I’ll dive into the countless articles online about how to help him stop. Until then, I’ll just be over here… wide awake.
