Hey Kids, Here’s Why You Should Clean Up After Yourselves

Last Saturday, I spent my day cleaning every bathroom in our house. Yet, just a day later, I walked into the kids’ bathroom to find toothpaste smeared on the mirror, the sink, and—believe it or not—the window! I can’t fathom how toothpaste made it to the window, and it’s beyond me why my kids would just leave it there. To make matters worse, there were retainers sitting on the sink next to used Q-tips, and the garbage can I had just emptied was already overflowing.

And that was just one room.

Heading downstairs, I was greeted by a sea of abandoned glasses, shoes scattered everywhere, and laptops and backpacks strewn across the floor. Just moments before, the area was clear. My kids often ask why I raise my voice about cleaning up. This happens daily, and it frustrates me to no end. Yes, they need to learn responsibility and self-reliance to become capable adults, but it’s also about being a good member of our home community.

Here’s what I remind myself—and them—about the importance of taking care of our space:

I pay for this place.
Paying the mortgage every month isn’t fun when it feels like our home is being treated like a dump. Take pride in your belongings, your room, and for heaven’s sake, if something doesn’t make it to the trash can, take a mere two seconds to put it there!
It can be dangerous.
I nearly tripped (not really, but you get the idea) while bringing in the groceries due to two pairs of size 12 sneakers blocking my path. I’ve slipped on spilled yogurt and almost hurt my back scrubbing slime off the ceiling. The list goes on.
I’m outnumbered.
There are more of you than there are of me. If we all pitch in and clean up after ourselves, life becomes much easier. It’s hard enough keeping track of my belongings because—surprise—I’m also human and don’t always feel like doing chores.
It won’t hurt you.
Nothing bad will happen if you take the time to hang up your towel, pick up your clothes, or put your dishes in the dishwasher. But if you don’t and leave it for me, something will happen to me, which means consequences for you. Like the WiFi password mysteriously changing, or you misplacing your phone. Just saying.
