20% of All Pediatric COVID Cases in the U.S. Reported in the Last Two Weeks

The hospitalization rate for children has stabilized at 0.7%, a slight decrease from 0.8% last October.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that the rise in pediatric cases does not indicate a heightened risk of severe illness for children. Instead, it reflects the variant’s high transmissibility and low vaccination rates among U.S. children. Vaccines are available for children aged 5 and older, but uptake remains notably low, and children under 5 are not yet eligible for vaccination.

“This could simply be due to the increase in overall cases, making children more susceptible when surrounded by more infections,” stated Dr. Michael Thompson, CDC Director, at a recent press briefing. “To date, we have not observed any increased severity with this variant.”
