A Rant About the Infamous Maternity Bra by Lisa Carter

I’ve been pregnant four times, and each time, my body transformed in ways I never imagined. The journey of nurturing another life inside me was awe-inspiring, as were the myriad changes my body experienced throughout those months. While the spotlight often shines on the growing belly, let’s not forget about another area undergoing significant transformation: the breasts. Seriously, can we please improve how we accommodate them? Yes, I’m referring to our ever-expanding bosoms. Throughout my nearly forty months of pregnancy, I never encountered a maternity bra that offered any semblance of comfort.
Let’s be honest—when I was pregnant, my breasts were enormous. We’re talking about melons that could easily compete with the biggest fruits in the grocery aisle. All I yearned for was a comfortable bra that provided support, yet they seemed impossible to find. And I don’t think this is just a concern for moms with larger busts; I believe it affects all sizes of pregnant breasts.
Those breasts are just as much a part of the pregnancy experience as the belly. They swell, fill with fluid, become sore, and are generally uncomfortable. So, why hasn’t anyone devised a way to pamper them? Instead, I found myself either cramming into a pre-pregnancy wired contraption or bouncing around in a sports bra that provided zero support. Even during pregnancy, I still appreciate a little lift! Unfortunately, options are limited.
Lack of support can lead to various pains, especially when you’re already dealing with back aches from carrying that precious cargo in your belly. A poorly fitting bra only exacerbates these discomforts. It’s perplexing why designers can create adorable tops with ruching and flexible pants that embrace the belly but seem to neglect the needs of our breasts.
So, who can we talk to about this? Is there an organization for bra manufacturers? A support group for expecting moms struggling with breast comfort? (See what I did there?) Surely there’s someone out there who can help. Brands like Playtex, Soma, Spanx, and Victoria’s Secret, I’m looking at you—do you have any solutions?
Though my days of pregnancy are behind me, my heart goes out to all the expectant moms who are on the hunt for the right fit during a time when everything feels off-kilter.
But there is hope! Soon, that little light of yours will arrive, bringing joy and brightness into your life. And before you know it, your maternity bra struggles will fade into memory—unless you’re nursing. Don’t even get me started on those bras!
