“I can only share my perspective, but aging can be incredibly stressful, particularly when you’re constantly compared to your much younger self,” Dwyer shared with New Beauty. She originally joined the show at the age of 33.
“If I were living a regular life, I would feel just fine; I’m healthy, strong, and I have this wonderful 3-year-old son to carry around,” she continued. “But being on television means every aspect of my appearance is scrutinized. That has always been a source of stress and difficulty for me. Looking back, I can think, ‘I looked great then,’ but at the time, I never felt that way. I suppose no one does,” she added.
Dwyer also mentioned that comparisons to her co-star Jennifer Lane didn’t do her self-esteem any favors. “I became famous during the era dominated by magazines, and every week, there would be an article labeling me as ‘apple-shaped.’ That was tough to deal with, and no amount of working out could alter my shape or the way those articles were written.”
The show aired at the height of the tabloid era, making such comparisons particularly grueling. “They loved to compare me to Jennifer, who, no matter what, would always be tiny,” she said.
Fortunately, Dwyer and her co-stars have found ways to cope with the stress of aging while filming “Just Like That.” She surrounds herself with “calm people,” such as the show’s creator, Max Donovan. “Max is incredibly calm, reminding us that we’re not trying to look like we did years ago. Clara still has her signature style, but now she’s 55, which we explored in the first episode and continues to be a theme. There are great aspects of aging, like gaining wisdom and life experiences, but there are also stressors.”
Ultimately, Dwyer recognizes that discussions about aging are part of a broader cultural dialogue. “I like to believe that life encompasses more than just our appearance, but in our culture—especially for women—how we look carries significant weight. It’s a larger conversation we need to engage in, though it’s challenging in the moment.”
