Why I’m Going All Out This Christmas

I’ve always cherished the holiday season. If I had unlimited funds, I would lavish everyone I know with gifts and treats, happily prancing around in faux fur and handing out homemade cookies. Unfortunately, with work and other obligations, I’ll have to make the most of Christmas within my own home this year.

During my marriage, I was always the one who loved the holidays more than my ex-partner. We often clashed over how much to spend on our kids’ gifts. While he preferred a more modest approach focused on shared experiences, I was all for showering them with presents.

After becoming a single mother, I faced uncertainty about what Christmas would look like. There were years when I had to forgo gifts to cover essential expenses like a new roof or saving for my children’s education. Despite these challenges, I’ve always managed to create a joyful holiday atmosphere, and I truly appreciate that privilege.

Over the years, I’ve learned through both modest and extravagant celebrations that my kids are less concerned with the number of presents and more attuned to their parents’ stress levels during the holidays. They do enjoy new things, but as parents, we often have a better grasp of what we can provide than our kids do.

This year, I’ve decided to indulge in the festivities simply because I want to. I began my holiday shopping early in the summer to spread out the expenses. After the challenges of the past few years with COVID and its impact on our lives, my family deserves to celebrate in a big way.

I’m not going overboard because my kids feel entitled; in fact, they don’t even know yet about my plans for a grand Christmas. They’ve shown incredible resilience throughout the pandemic, rarely asking for anything, and have often been my source of strength.

Feeling happier than I have in a long time, I am grateful for the health of my family and friends. I’ve gained clarity on what truly matters and have developed a deeper connection with my children over the past few years. With the realization that we may not have many more Christmases together under one roof, I’ve focused on creating joyful moments for us. I’ve come to understand that being busy isn’t fulfilling.

This year, I want to celebrate in a meaningful way—not just by filling the room with gifts. I plan to take my kids out to their favorite restaurants, bake their favorite holiday cookies, host a Christmas party with their friends, and even support families in need. I want to create lasting memories by watching holiday movies with them and ensuring they have a truly special season.

I recognize that memorable experiences often come from having the time and freedom to be spontaneous rather than over-scheduling ourselves. Therefore, I’ll be selective about commitments and avoid anything that adds unnecessary stress, especially during this busy season.

For all these reasons, I’m excited to go big this Christmas. Each day, I wake up filled with anticipation. That excitement is the greatest gift of all; my children deserve this celebration, and so do I. So, let the festivities begin!
