In an exciting announcement, executive producer Frank Rivera revealed that the original cast of Saved By The Bell will pay a heartfelt tribute to Screech in the season two premiere. Although the reboot’s first season, which debuted on Peacock in late 2020, was unexpectedly clever and entertaining, fans noted the absence of some beloved characters, particularly Samuel “Screech” Powers, portrayed by the late Dustin Diamond.

Following Diamond’s tragic passing at just 44, viewers speculated whether the new season would honor the quirky and endearing Screech. Frank Rivera, who also directed the original series, confirmed that not only will there be a touching homage, but all five original cast members will enjoy expanded roles in the upcoming season.

Rivera shared with Variety that he had discussions with Diamond before his death about incorporating him into the new season, emphasizing a desire to honor the character in a way that went beyond a simple photo tribute at the end of an episode. After consulting with cast members like Jessie and AC, played by Ellen Smith and Marco Lopez, as well as guest stars Zack, Kelly, and Lisa, it was decided that Bayside High’s most famous alumni would reunite at their iconic hangout, The Max.

Rivera noted that both the ongoing pandemic and Diamond’s passing influenced the tribute’s direction. “This past year has been heavy for everyone,” he reflected. “It felt necessary to acknowledge that authentically, allowing our original characters to mourn a beloved figure we will never see again.” He added, “We wanted to approach this with care, recognizing the real person behind the character who meant so much to many.”

The tribute is set to resonate deeply with millennials, featuring sentimental flashback clips of Screech in the first episode of season two. Rivera expressed, “While Screech was often the punchline, we wanted to showcase his significance to the show and to the other characters.”

Additionally, fans can look forward to seeing more of Zack, Kelly, and Lisa, as the new season promises to delve deeper into their lives as adults. The wait won’t be long, as season two will stream on Peacock starting November 24, just in time for the holidays.
