Calm Down, Holiday Enthusiasts — It’s Still Fall!

Hey there, fall lovers! Can you believe it? It is STILL fall! I know November 1st is just around the corner, which means some of you are ready to dive headfirst into Christmas mode. You’ve probably started fantasizing about swapping your pumpkins and sunflowers for pine cones and holiday cheer. Soon enough, those straw bales nestled among your tasteful gourds will be replaced by cheerful “Santa Stop Here!” signs and decorative reindeer. Maybe you even have a reversible scarecrow-snowman decoration that’s itching to be flipped. Your acorn wreath might be shoved into storage, making way for a fresh evergreen look by lunchtime on November 1st. You’re all set to say, “Goodbye fall, hello CHRISTMAS!”

Now, I get it — you’re an adult and can do what you want. But after 37 years of life, I’ve learned that I can’t resist pleading my case in hopes of swaying a few minds, so here goes: YOU’RE RUSHING IT, EARLY-CHRISTMAS FANS!

Why would you want to kick autumn to the curb on November 1st? Everyone knows it’s the best season out there! The weather is divine, the décor is charming, and those fall colors? Absolutely stunning.

We’ve just unpacked our warm rusts, mustards, olive greens, and navy blues. Our cardigans are still getting their first wear, and our knee-high boots are just getting started. We haven’t even fully embraced bonfire season yet! Pumpkin patches are still open for business. We have FOUR MORE WEEKS!

Let’s not forget Thanksgiving, folks. Sure, the old tales of “pilgrims and Indians” sharing a feast are outdated and need a serious rework. But taking a day to focus on gratitude? That’s still a lovely tradition. Can we please enjoy turkey and thankfulness in our cozy autumn hues before we rush to put away the cornucopias and pull out the advent calendars?

When you set out your pumpkins and woodland decor in September, you should commit to keeping them up until November ends — not just until November 1st. Seriously, let’s enjoy fall through the whole month!

I’ll admit my strong feelings about November stem from my childhood. I’ve never been one to rush into December; November is my favorite month! With my birthday in the last week of November, it sometimes gets overshadowed by Thanksgiving. So, I’m not keen on adding yet another holiday on top of it early.

Of course, there are exceptions. I broke my own rule last year because of the pandemic. With no vaccine and little holiday spirit, I was searching for any spark of magic for my kids. When my son wanted to decorate in early November, I thought, “Why not?” It did lift my spirits a bit. If you’re going through a tough time and a sprinkle of holiday cheer would help, then go for it! I’m not here to dictate how you celebrate.

But in regular, non-pandemic years, I stand firm on my belief: no Christmas until Black Friday. If you want to rush to the Christmas tree lot right after finishing your Thanksgiving dishes, I support you. Just know that my Novembers will always be the final month of autumn, not a prelude to Christmas. I’m convinced I’m right about this one — it’s simply too early for Christmas décor on November 1st.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m totally fine with Christmas decorations staying up until the end of January. Heck, keep them up as long as you want! I’m not a grinch; I just have strong opinions about November.
