If you haven’t heard yet, the Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated producer Ava DuVernay has launched a new series on NBC this fall called “Home Sweet Home” (not to be mistaken for Disney Plus’s new movie, Home Sweet Home Alone). I’m beyond excited about it!
Recently, I had the opportunity to join a Zoom call with Ava and two families featured on “Home Sweet Home.” They shared their amazing experiences on the show, and after watching the first episode today, I’m convinced that Ava is a true visionary.
About the Show
“Home Sweet Home” pairs families with vastly different lifestyles for a transformative home-swapping adventure. Both families get to experience life through each other’s eyes, breaking down racial, religious, economic, geographic, gender, and identity preconceptions as they exchange homes for a week. Each episode concludes with the families reuniting to discuss their eye-opening and life-altering experiences.
Episode 1 was incredibly emotional and had me in tears. I can only imagine how the rest of the season will unfold, as the series, reminiscent of “Wife Swap,” exposes families to vulnerability by swapping lives with strangers for a week.
My Thoughts on the Experience
While the concept of opening my home to strangers seems a bit daunting, I would be open to the experience. The idea of trading homes with another family to immerse myself in a different culture is truly fascinating.
In the first episode, one of the Wixx twin daughters likened going to another home to “diving into a pool,” comparing the uncertainty of the other family to the unpredictability of water temperature before jumping in. These kids are impressively mature for their age, and they really grasp the concept!
The families leave behind a “handbook” for their new hosts, similar to what was done on “Wife Swap,” which helps the new family understand their lives better for the week. I find this to be a wonderful touch, and now I’m curious about what I would include in my own handbook.
Importance of the Show
The entire experience seems not only amazing but also essential. In a world where racism is becoming more overt, I applaud Ava for creating a show that emphasizes the importance of celebrating, rather than just tolerating, diverse cultures and families. It serves as a reminder that, despite our differing religions and histories, we share many commonalities.
If NBC decides to renew this for another season, I’m all in! I would love the chance to immerse myself in another culture and swap homes for a week. New episodes air weekly on NBC at 8 PM/7 PM Central on Fridays, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Hulu.
