The First Look at Disney+’s ‘Home Alone’ Reimagining Is Here

The trailer for the new version of Home Alone, titled Home Sweet Home Alone, has just dropped. For years, the original Home Alone has been my go-to holiday movie, always making its way into my December viewing lineup. So, when I discovered that Disney+ was rebooting this beloved classic, I was all ears.

“On the eve of Christmas vacation, the festivities are in full swing. But one little detail was overlooked when the family embarked on their trip…” the trailer kicks off.

What to Expect from Home Sweet Home Alone

Home Sweet Home Alone follows the same basic premise (a child left behind during the holidays while the family vacations abroad), but this time, the protagonist is British (not from Chicago), the vacation spot is Tokyo (instead of Paris), and the would-be burglars are the charming Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney (not the intimidating duo of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).

Is it reminiscent of the Home Alone you loved? Not exactly. Will the British accents take some getting used to? Absolutely, but I’m here for it. And you can bet I’ll be streaming this when it arrives on Disney+.

While it’s hard to imagine anyone else but the brilliant Pesci as a hapless burglar, Kemper and Delaney bring a humorous twist as a couple trying to reclaim a valuable family heirloom. “I can’t go to jail, honey. I’d be a fresh fish in gen pop,” Delaney’s character exclaims, to which Kemper retorts, “Nobody here is getting caught!”

Archie Yates takes on the role of the clever Max Mercer, who—unlike Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister—is fully prepared for the home invasion when his parents head to Japan without him. Aisling Bea, portraying Max’s mom, channels the spirit of Catherine O’Hara as she desperately tries to get back home. The cast also includes Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell.

A Nod to the Original

For those skeptics lamenting the need for a Home Alone reboot, let’s remember there are actually five movies in the Home Alone franchise. While many fans tuned out after the second film (Home Alone: Lost In New York), this new movie was certainly made to be revisited. Plus, there’s a nostalgic nod to the original, as Devin Ratray returns as the infamous cousin Buzz McCallister, now playing a cop.

Home Sweet Home Alone is set to premiere on November 12, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.
