A Celebration of Being in the Middle Years

So many remarkable individuals resist the enchantment of aging. Personally, I cherish being in my middle years. I don’t feel OLD, yet when I encounter someone fresh out of college, there’s a definitive reminder—I’m not that anymore. I’m comfortably in the middle.

Life is still enjoyable, albeit with a few more scars—each representing lessons learned and wisdom gained. Sure, I sometimes reminisce about my 22-year-old self, who could indulge in an absurd amount of cheese without any consequences. There are days when I gently place my hand on my stomach, sighing at the transformation from smooth skin interrupted only by my belly button ring to a landscape marked by two 10-pound babies born just 13 months apart. Was it worth it for those two blue-eyed bundles of joy? Absolutely. Is it less glamorous now? You bet.

I chuckle at the surgeon preparing to repair my umbilical hernia, who casually asks if he needs to cut higher to preserve my belly button ring hole. I shrug and reply, “That’s not a priority anymore. Just do what you need to do.” These days, my choices are guided by practicality. I would gladly give up my belly button ring for the rewards of being in my middle years.

Here are my top five reasons for loving this phase of life:

  1. Increased Self-Awareness: After all these years, you accumulate a wealth of knowledge about yourself. If you’re courageous enough to introspect, you can discover the environments where you thrive, the self-care routines that work for you, and the people who energize you. Make an effort to surround yourself with those who bring sunshine into your life.
  2. Gratitude for My Body: Yes, my abs were firmer a decade ago, but I was youthful and unappreciative. Now, my body has seen more journeys, and I am genuinely grateful for it. This body has nurtured and birthed two incredible blue-eyed miracles, comforted countless children, and overcome significant challenges like yoga teacher training and various surgeries. I know now that I can endure hardships and emerge stronger.
  3. Indifference to Peer Pressure: I no longer feel compelled to do things just to fit in. Recently, my younger siblings tried to persuade me to join them at an inflatable park. I smiled and gave them a cheeky gesture when the kids weren’t looking. Enjoying the day from solid ground, rather than risking a tumble and an embarrassing moment, sounded much more appealing.
  4. Mature Decision-Making: With a fully developed brain, I can navigate relationships and life with clarity. I’ve learned that hurtful words often reflect the speaker’s insecurities. When someone is unkind, it usually stems from their own struggles. I remind my children that if people are talking about me, it means I’m interesting!
  5. Empowerment in Creation: In youth, it feels like life happens to you. In middle age, if you’re fortunate, you realize you are the architect of your own life. You choose your career, your partner, and how you spend your time. You are responsible for setting healthy boundaries; the world won’t do it for you. If you’re unhappy with what you’ve created, remember—it’s never too late to start anew.

Don’t dismiss the beauty of being in your middle years just because of a few wrinkles. Embrace the fact that there’s no better time to live and love. If you find yourself lamenting the responsibilities of adulthood, take a moment to look at your hand—then give yourself a light slap for me. You are the smartest, most evolved version of yourself right now. Celebrate it!
