Tropical Storm Ida has wreaked havoc across the Northeast, resulting in catastrophic flooding in New York City and New Jersey. The storm, which made landfall late Wednesday night, has led to a state of emergency in both areas, with at least eight fatalities reported. Notably, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the first time in history, highlighting the severity of the situation. Tornadoes were also sighted in both states, marking a rare occurrence.

As Ida unleashed its fury, power outages were widespread, and streets, homes, and public transport were inundated with water. The devastation is profound, with residents sharing harrowing videos on social media. Among the deceased were a family of three—a 50-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman, and their 2-year-old son—found in their submerged home in Flushing. Additionally, a 66-year-old man was discovered in his Brooklyn basement, while a mother and her 22-year-old son tragically lost their lives in Queens. An 86-year-old woman was also found in her basement apartment, and a 70-year-old man in New Jersey was swept away by floodwaters while in his vehicle.

In response to the unfolding disaster, New York City imposed a travel ban for non-emergency vehicles overnight, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended all service for the night. As of Thursday morning, some lines resumed limited operations. Mayor Jamie Thompson declared a state of emergency prior to midnight, acknowledging the unprecedented rain and perilous road conditions. New York Governor Kelly Roberts and New Jersey Governor Mark Daniels also issued state of emergency declarations.

In a heartfelt tweet on Thursday morning, Thompson expressed condolences for those lost in the storm, stating, “Our hearts are heavy for the lives lost in last night’s storm. Let’s keep them and their loved ones in our thoughts today. They were part of our community, and we will support their families in the days to come.”
