Let me take you back for a moment: I grew up in the ‘80s with three siblings, and I can count on one hand the times my parents bought us toys outside of birthdays or Christmas. Our childhood was filled with hand-me-downs, gifts from neighbors, and we shared everything since our family of six was supported by a single military salary. Yet, I wouldn’t trade those days—like using my tricycle as a makeshift ice-cream maker (long story!) or pretending a circle drawn on a rock was a stove—for anything.
However, nothing compared to the thrill of arriving at the Toys ‘R’ Us store as a child. My parents kept these trips a secret to avoid the chaos and anticipation, and we only went three times during my upbringing. But those moments were pure magic. I vividly recall one evening driving past Toys “R” Us just before Christmas—it sparkled with lights, and even though we didn’t go inside, my parents assured us Santa would be stopping there. That year, I received my cherished Peaches-N-Cream Barbie, making it one of my best Christmases ever.
When I became an adult and worked in retail, I managed a store and had to arrive at 6 AM for Black Friday preparations. Back in the late ‘90s, the line outside the local Toys “R” Us snaked through the parking lot, all for the limited stock of Tickle Me Elmo. I could feel those childhood butterflies as I thought back to my own visits to Toys “R” Us, hoping my favorite toy would be waiting for me.
If you’re feeling nostalgic or simply miss wandering through the aisles of Toys “R” Us, we have exciting news: the iconic store is set to relaunch in select locations just in time for the holiday season.
According to MSN, toy sales surged last year, making it an opportune moment to bring back Toys “R” Us, which filed for bankruptcy in 2017. Brand management company WHP Global recently acquired a controlling interest in the parent company of Toys “R” Us. CEO Yehuda Shmidman announced plans for the revival of Toys “R” Us in various formats across the U.S., including pop-up shops, mini stores, flagship locations, and airport outlets—moving away from the traditional large store model.
So, where can we experience the Toys “R” Us magic once more? You’ll soon find them in over 400 Macy’s locations across the U.S., with merchandise already available online, as reported by CNBC. Additionally, select Disney Stores within Target will carry Toys “R” Us products, according to The Motley Fool.
We also spoke with the owner of Kids2, the parent company behind brands like Baby Einstein and Bright Starts. Ryan Gunnigle expressed that Toys “R” Us was a significant part of their business and emphasized how its closure prompted them to diversify their operations. He looks forward to the partnership between Toys “R” Us and Macy’s, both of which are beloved retail brands.
This news is definitely something to look forward to for both kids and adults alike. After all, who doesn’t want to hold onto that inner child? We all long to remain Toys “R” Us kids at heart.
