He also became physically aggressive toward us.

Both were trapped in a cycle of failure with no support, and the situation only deteriorated. Jesse’s relationship with our family became increasingly strained, ultimately forcing him to leave home at 22. Unable to manage his anger, my mother had no choice but to let him go.
His time away led him to a tumultuous military career, which ended abruptly when his mental health issues became apparent. He returned home feeling angrier and more isolated than ever, and shortly after, he brutally took our mother’s life.
Sadly, individuals like Jesse often lash out at strangers too. They commit acts of violence in schools, theaters, and public spaces, driven by a desire to demonstrate the pain of their isolation. This is the root of their hatred.
So, how can we change this narrative?
While the responsibility for such heinous acts lies with the perpetrators, we must take collective action to foster love over hate. Isolation and anger are natural feelings, and many of us learn to cope with them. Yet, some individuals seek revenge, as my brother did. It’s not solely the government’s responsibility to regulate firearms, nor is it just about parenting. Stricter laws can help, but the solution lies in love.
Regardless of your beliefs, background, or identity, we have a duty to support one another. By fostering connections and making those in pain feel valued, we can combat the cycle of hatred.
