Mini-Monies: The COVID-19 Wedding Trend We Adore

As the world began to reopen, it felt like life was returning to some semblance of normalcy. With the rollout of vaccines and the arrival of warmer weather, COVID-19 cases started to decline. Mask mandates lifted, and limitations on gatherings were eased, leading many couples to believe it was time to celebrate their long-awaited weddings once more.

However, the emergence of the Delta variant brought renewed challenges. Hospitals filled up, mask mandates resurfaced, and there were even reports of virus transmission among vaccinated wedding attendees. Consequently, couples found themselves reconsidering their wedding plans. Enter the mini-mony.

I spoke with Alex Morgan, the founder of Dreamy Weddings, a company specializing in enchanting ceremonies in breathtaking locations, about the rising popularity of this wedding trend.

The Rise of Mini-Monies

It’s essential to note that mini-monies, also referred to as micro-weddings and elopements, are not a novel concept. Morgan’s company has been organizing intimate micro-weddings (with guest lists under twenty) well before the pandemic began. Even prior to COVID, Morgan observed a growing desire for smaller, more personalized gatherings as couples shifted away from traditional large weddings designed to please family. The pandemic has only accelerated this movement, making it more mainstream.

“Given the economic impacts of COVID and the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, many couples are now gravitating toward simple, intimate ceremonies held in stunning outdoor venues,” Morgan explains.

A mini-mony typically includes up to fifty guests, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing luxury. “You can still wear that stunning white gown, hire a photographer for the entire day, and indulge in the finer details—it’s just about having fewer guests,” she adds.

Planning Amid Uncertainty

As we navigate this evolving situation, it’s crucial to remain adaptable. The past eighteen months have taught us to be prepared for anything. Initially, couples felt frustrated when forced to postpone their weddings, but now, there’s a noticeable shift towards resilience and adaptability.

Morgan advises couples who dream of a large wedding to reflect on their true desires. If having a ceremony with 200 guests is essential to them, they shouldn’t feel rushed into a smaller ceremony. For those eager to start their lives together sooner, she suggests hosting a small elopement now and planning a larger celebration later. “You can have both,” she reassures, “it’s not an either/or situation.”

Many of Morgan’s clients have already tied the knot but are opting to celebrate with a larger gathering later.

Tips for a Dreamy Outdoor Wedding

If you decide on an outdoor wedding, consider these tips from Morgan:

  • Choose moderate weather—spring or early autumn works beautifully.
  • Select your dream location, whether it be a beach, farm, mountain, or lake. Her company often secures permits for picturesque sites.
  • Maintain traditions—couples can still enjoy reveal photos, dress up, and partake in classic wedding rituals.
  • Appreciate the eco-friendly aspect of your wedding.
  • Capture every moment with plenty of photos and videos.
  • Prioritize safety by ensuring your event doesn’t become a “superspreader” incident.

Infectious disease expert Dr. Sarah Reynolds also offers some advice for safe celebrations: use digital communication for any updates regarding health protocols, set clear expectations for guests regarding safety measures, and ensure that there’s adequate space for social distancing, even outdoors.

While the pandemic may have propelled mini-monies into the spotlight, they’re far from a second-rate option. Many couples who initially planned grand indoor weddings found the smaller, more intimate events exceeded their expectations—leaving them feeling less stressed and more fulfilled. As Morgan puts it, “People often worry it will be a lackluster event, but most are delighted with their decision.”
