I’m sharing my story because I know I’m not the only one facing this challenge. Many families have one partner who trusts science and gets vaccinated to safeguard everyone, while the other partner refuses for what I can only describe as selfish reasons.
My partner and I usually share similar beliefs, so it was a shock when he declared he wouldn’t be getting the COVID vaccine due to his mistrust of the government and his belief in a larger conspiracy theory. I pressed him for an explanation, especially considering the global impact of the virus and the uniformity of the vaccine options available. His response was defensive rather than informative, and I insisted that he:
- Provide credible scientific reasoning for his refusal.
- Get vaccinated to protect our four children, who are too young for the vaccine themselves.
He struggled to back up his refusal with reliable scientific facts, and even our pediatrician advised him to get vaccinated for the sake of the kids. His parents also voiced their disappointment, emphasizing the need for him to take responsibility not only for his health but for our children’s safety. This was particularly poignant since his own great-grandmother had succumbed to COVID-19 complications prior to the vaccine’s availability.
I was torn between love for my partner and concern for our family’s wellbeing. I contemplated drastic actions—should he move out? Should we separate? I love him, but his choices posed a potential dealbreaker. Our children’s safety was my priority, and his apparent disregard for that value was incredibly disheartening.
He had to report to his office twice a week, supposedly masked and socially distanced, but could I trust his judgment? Then he came down with what he called a “cold.” You can probably guess the rest. I insisted he get tested, and the result was COVID-19. His condition worsened, and I became frantic about our children’s health. He isolated himself, and in the midst of my anger, I had to manage the logistics of getting everyone tested, all while caring for our four small kids.
All of our children eventually tested positive or exhibited symptoms of COVID-19. I’m currently symptom-free, but I’m exhausted from taking care of my sick partner and kids. My husband has had to visit the ER multiple times, and we’re currently managing his health from home while staying in close contact with his doctor.
My anger is compounded by my deep-seated worry about his health. I can’t shake the images of him potentially needing a ventilator or the possibility of losing him. I have to suppress these thoughts to focus on taking care of our children.
Here’s how each of our kids is handling the situation:
- Child 1, age 10, has cold-like symptoms but struggles with sleep due to congestion.
- Child 2, age 8, has respiratory symptoms, and I’m closely monitoring his condition.
- Child 3, age 6, has more severe sinus issues and frequent fevers that leave me anxious.
- Child 4, age 3, shows a mix of symptoms and has needed medical attention.
I’m constantly measuring their vitals and tracking their hydration to ensure they stay stable. My anxiety is overwhelming. But more than that, I feel a profound anger towards my husband for bringing this virus into our home. I had taken every precaution to keep our family safe, and now we’re facing this nightmare because of his refusal to get vaccinated.
I can’t fathom the thought of anything happening to my children. If something were to occur, I can’t even imagine the consequences for him. While I still care for him and ensure he has what he needs, I can’t look at him without feeling a surge of resentment. My sympathy is reserved for our kids, who are the true victims in this situation.
I haven’t thought about what our future looks like after this ordeal. Right now, I’m focused on minute-to-minute care for my children. My trust has been shattered, and I feel deeply betrayed. He knowingly put our children at risk, and they are now suffering because of it.
