The U.S. reported an average of over 71,000 daily cases on Thursday, a significant uptick from earlier in the year when vaccination rates were higher, and cases were declining. The delta variant has largely reversed the progress made, though current case numbers remain lower than last winter’s peak.
Previously believed to be rare, transmission of the virus by vaccinated individuals is now thought to be much more common, contributing to the spread of the delta variant. In response, the CDC has recommended that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors in areas experiencing surges in cases. However, some regions, influenced by anti-mask sentiments, have enacted legislation to prohibit mask mandates in schools and communities. Despite these challenges, vaccination continues to be the best defense against the delta variant, but the U.S. vaccination rate has plateaued at just over 50% for those aged 12 and older.
