Sometimes, as I browse through old photos and videos of my kids when they were toddlers and preschoolers, I feel a wave of nostalgia. For a fleeting moment, I yearn to return to those days filled with their high-pitched voices and quirky antics. I remember when my biggest worry was whether they’d take their naps, instead of stressing about issues like vaping and getting their driver’s licenses—yikes!
These sentimental moments often pop up when my teens and pre-teens are being especially, well, teenage. But I quickly shake off those thoughts and remind myself just how exhausting those early years were and how much I genuinely enjoy this stage of parenting.
Honestly, I’m a bit afraid to say this out loud—who knows, I might regret it right after—but I really love raising teens. I anticipated it would be terrifying, and it is. I expected it to be mentally draining, and boy, is it ever. Yet, it’s also far more rewarding than I ever imagined. Here’s why:
1. Teens are Hilarious.
Like, genuinely funny. Sure, toddlers can be silly, and preschoolers say the most unexpected things, but teens have a knack for humor that catches you off guard. My teenager often cracks jokes that make me spit out my coffee, leaving me wondering where that came from. I find myself laughing far more with my teens than I ever did with toddlers.
2. They Have Unique Perspectives.
Recently, I’ve had some fascinating discussions with my teen and pre-teen about topics like the minimum wage, bullying, the justice system, and even religion. While I don’t always agree with their viewpoints, their fresh perspectives on important issues are enlightening. It’s exciting to witness their minds expanding while they still hold onto some innocence.
3. You Feel Young Again (But Also Old).
I spoke with a colleague in her twenties who expressed feeling out of touch with current youth trends. Living with a teen, however, keeps me in the loop. I’ve heard all the latest slang—even if I don’t always understand it!
4. Fun Activities Together.
When my kids were younger, finding shared activities was a challenge. Now, we can enjoy a variety of things together—whether it’s watching sports, going hiking, dining out, or binge-watching shows. It’s fantastic not to have to wait for bedtime to watch something together; if I did, I’d miss out since my teens stay up later than I do!
5. Glimpses of Their Future Selves.
Occasionally, I’ll observe my teen sharing their thoughts, and I catch a glimpse of the adult they might become. It’s like watching a Polaroid picture slowly develop—so much potential and possibility still left. It’s both thrilling and daunting, like a roller coaster ride that makes you scream while also filling you with joy.
Don’t get me wrong; teens can definitely be challenging. I know that what lies ahead with my teenagers will test my patience and resilience. But for now, I’m celebrating this phase of parenthood. Even if I’m hesitant to admit it (knock on wood), I genuinely love this stage. Teens can be pretty amazing, and it’s vital to voice that amid all the warnings about the “dreaded teen years.” This way, I can remind myself on the tough days.
