Scholastic Trade Publishing expressed that Kaepernick’s compelling narrative will resonate with children, highlighting the importance of understanding and celebrating diversity. The story is rooted in a significant memory from Kaepernick’s early years, where he recalls a kindergarten project that made him aware of his differences from his adopted white family. As he transitioned from using a yellow crayon to a brown one while drawing his family, it marked a pivotal moment in his understanding of identity.

Kaepernick hopes that his story will encourage young readers to embrace their true selves and live authentically. He stated, “I’m thrilled that Kaepernick Publishing is partnering with Scholastic to amplify Black and Brown voices. I aspire for our books to empower readers to navigate the world with confidence and truth.”

The picture book will be edited by Andrea Davis Pinkney, VP and Executive Editor of Scholastic, with illustrations by Eric Wilkerson. Debra Dorfman, VP and Publisher at Scholastic Global Licensing, highlighted Kaepernick’s commitment to impactful storytelling for children of color, emphasizing the alignment of their missions.

Kaepernick established Kaepernick Publishing in 2019 with the vision of uplifting diverse voices through impactful literature. Both I Color Myself Different and another title, Abolition For The People: The Movement For A Future Without Policing & Prisons, are currently available for pre-order.

“We are honored to introduce this important work to young readers globally,” said Ellie Berger, President and Publisher of Scholastic Trade Publishing.
