A woman on the lookout to adopt a new furry friend made an astonishing discovery on her local humane society’s website: her long-lost dog from years past was waiting to be adopted.
Luna, a pit bull-rottweiler mix once belonging to Mia Thompson, had gone missing two years earlier. “I couldn’t believe my eyes! I thought, ‘No way that’s him,’” Thompson recalled. “But then I saw the distinct scar over his eye, the one he got when he got caught in a gate, and I knew right away, that’s my boy, that’s Luna!”
The heartwarming tale began in June 2021 when a car crashed through Thompson’s fence, allowing Luna to escape. After weeks of searching, she learned that animal rescue had found him wandering as a stray, subsequently bringing him to the Lehigh County Humane Society (LCHS), where he was named Max.
“He was my everything. He accompanied me everywhere and even slept in my bed,” Thompson shared. “He truly was the definition of a best friend.” Unfortunately, after months of searching, she lost hope of ever finding him again.
According to LCHS community engagement manager, Sarah Hargrove, Luna required four months of medical treatment for fleas and inflammation. Eventually, he was put up for adoption and found a new family. However, after two years, that family had to return him to LCHS due to eviction caused by the pandemic.
As fate would have it, Thompson was searching for a new dog when she stumbled upon Luna’s profile.
“Once I provided proof of ownership, I went to visit him, and it was instantly clear that Max was actually Luna, my beloved pet from years ago,” Hargrove recounted. “The reunion was so touching, and you could see the recognition in Luna’s eyes. It was an unforgettable moment.”
“Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, which likely helped him recognize her,” Hargrove explained, noting that it’s not uncommon for dogs to remember their owners even after long separations. “There are countless videos of military dogs joyfully reuniting with their owners after years apart, and Luna’s reaction was just as heartwarming.”
For Thompson, the reunion was a dream come true. “The moment he saw me, he started squealing, jumping, and showering me with kisses. I love him so much. I’m just overjoyed to have him back!”
