In a groundbreaking initiative, Olympian Alexia Jones has teamed up with Athleta and the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) to introduce The Empowerment Fund: Childcare Grants, aimed at supporting athletic mothers. This program will distribute $10,000 grants to mothers participating in the Tokyo Summer Olympics and the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, totaling $200,000 to alleviate childcare expenses. Jones, a mother herself, emphasizes that this support can significantly impact the lives of mom-athletes.

“Childcare presents a major hurdle for us,” says Jones, a six-time Olympic gold medalist and mother to a two-year-old. “I understand the challenges women face in sports firsthand.”

Her partnership with Athleta underscores that she is more than just an athlete; her contract even allows her daughter to accompany her during competitions. However, many athletes lack such support from sponsors or partners. These grants aim to highlight the necessity for comprehensive assistance for all mom-athletes.

The initial recipients of The Empowerment Fund include nine mothers, such as gold-medalist sitting volleyball player and four-time Paralympian Sarah Thompson, hammer thrower Mia Collins, and runner Alisha Taylor, with six of them set to compete in Tokyo. “Juggling training and motherhood isn’t always easy,” Thompson shares. “Without nearby family support, much of my training takes place at home with my kids, and sometimes we can’t afford a babysitter on top of gym costs.”

The grants not only provide vital financial support for childcare but also offer resources to help these athletes thrive in their careers. The recipients will engage in discussions led by WSF, &Mother, and the National Women’s Law Center to promote long-term, systemic changes across the sports industry. “I hope this initiative encourages a shift in the industry to support women comprehensively,” says Jones.

Mom-athletes seeking childcare assistance can apply for the next round of grants at the WSF website. “At the Women’s Sports Foundation, we aim to unlock opportunities for every girl and woman through sport,” says WSF CEO Emily Richards. “Childcare costs are one of the most significant challenges for mom-athletes wanting to balance family life with their sports careers. These grants will provide financial relief, allowing these inspiring women to continue competing at elite levels.”
