In a heartwarming turn of events, a black cat named Shadow was found safe nearly two weeks after the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo in Miami. The feline, who resided on the ninth floor, was discovered on Friday and joyously reunited with its family. Miami-Dade County Mayor Isabella Martinez referred to the rescue as a “miracle.”

“I’m grateful that this small miracle could offer some comfort to a family in pain today and provide a glimmer of hope for our entire community amid this devastating tragedy,” Martinez shared during a press conference.

According to local reports, a volunteer who was feeding stray cats in the vicinity found Shadow “in the area” of the collapsed structure. The cat was then taken to a local shelter, where it was positively identified as belonging to one of the residents of the building.

“There are numerous cats in the area, and we have deployed our Animal Services Department with live traps to locate them, while also supporting volunteers feeding these animals,” Martinez explained.

Gina Miller, co-founder of the shelter, took to social media to celebrate the “small miracle,” stating that Friday was “one of the most extraordinary days.”

“A black cat resembling Shadow from unit #904 was brought to our facility last night by FEMA. Authorities have been visiting our Miami office since then. The cat was found near the rubble!” Miller wrote. “We just needed a glimmer of hope in this tragedy. One of the survivors came to see the cat to confirm if it was her family’s pet—and it was! We’re so thankful to assist in any way we can. These families have endured so much, but our South Florida communities’ teamwork has brought them this small joy.”

During the briefing, the mayor reported that the death toll from the condo collapse had reached 79, with 53 individuals identified and 61 still unaccounted for. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in reuniting [Shadow] with their family,” Martinez tweeted.
