On July 7, singer Halsey, who is expecting her first child, debuted the cover art for her upcoming album, set to release on August 27. She revealed the cover for “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City, and she looked absolutely breathtaking.
In her Instagram post unveiling the album cover, Halsey explained, “This album is a concept piece exploring the highs and lows of pregnancy and childbirth. It was crucial for me that the cover art reflected my experiences over these past few months. I wanted to encapsulate the duality of the Madonna and the Whore, illustrating that I can be a sexual being while also embracing my body as a vessel and a gift to my child. My body has been publicly owned in various ways over the years, and this image represents my reclamation of autonomy and my pride as a life force.”
As reported by Variety, Halsey penned the songs on this album and collaborated with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails. She emphasized that the cover image honors the beauty of pregnant and postpartum bodies, which deserve admiration. “We still have a long way to go in eliminating the stigma surrounding bodies and breastfeeding. I hope this can be a step toward that goal!”
Earlier this year, Halsey shared the exciting news of her pregnancy, referring to the baby as her “rainbow,” a term used for a child conceived after a loss. In 2018, she bravely discussed her miscarriage that occurred during a live performance. “Before I could fully grasp what that pregnancy meant for me and my future, I found myself on stage miscarrying in front of hundreds of teenagers. It was a moment that made me realize I never want to choose between my passion and my health again,” she shared on The Doctors.
Halsey’s commitment to using her platform to normalize breastfeeding and celebrate pregnant and postpartum bodies is commendable, and we fully support her efforts.
