Leslie Jones is back and ready to bring her hilarious commentary to the Summer Olympic Games! After entertaining fans with her lively takes during the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2018 Winter Olympics, Jones has returned to Twitter to share her insights on the 2021 Olympic games.
With the Summer Olympics set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from July 23 to August 8, 2021, Team USA is currently competing in the Olympic Trials. Sadly, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Jones won’t be able to provide her live commentary at the games this year, as they will be held without spectators. Instead, we’ll get to enjoy her live tweets.
“Look at this! They’re throwing spears in the god darn Olympics!” Jones exclaimed while watching a women’s track and field trial on June 28, 2021.
She had plenty to say about various events, but her passion really shone through during one of Simone Biles’ performances. At the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials on June 25, 2021, Biles waited for her score on the balance beam, as judges deliberated on how to value her exceptional move, which had to be named after her because no one else could do it.
Jones wasn’t having any of it: “You hear this? They’re calling it a controversy because she created a dismount that they had to name after her because nobody else can do it,” she stated. “Listen up, world! There’s a first time for everything. Don’t be upset because this girl is so incredibly talented that y’all can’t keep up with her flips.”
“How do you ‘devalue’ a jump?” Jones questioned. “If anything, I’d just say, ‘Simone, we’re giving you a 10, OK? We don’t know how to judge that because nobody has done it before, but you won the Olympics, alright?’”
In another event featuring Biles, Jones joked, “Just give her the medal already; she’s basically won the Olympics at the trials. How can you win the Olympics when it’s just the trials? They just don’t get that self-motivation is a powerful thing.”
Just two days later, Jones was back, shedding tears of joy when Biles’ protégé Jordan Chiles delivered an outstanding performance on her floor routine. “That’s no wobbles,” Leslie commented regarding the beam performance.
Jones doesn’t just critique the athletes; she also has a keen eye for the commentators. The brilliance of her commentary stems from her genuine passion for the athletes. As she puts it, “I actually give a care about the athletes.”
Let’s wrap up with her best remark from the Olympic trials so far: “Yo, I’m just so impressed.” Same here!
