President Biden hosted an LGBTQ+ Pride event at the White House, marking the revival of such celebrations after they were largely overlooked during the previous administration. Jamie, a former youth ambassador for the Human Rights Campaign, shared that he came out to his mother on his 12th birthday. “I was anxious because I didn’t know how she would feel, but she told me she loved me, that I was her child, and that she would support me in becoming who I was meant to be,” he recounted.
Using his platform, Rivera highlighted the discrimination faced by the transgender community, noting the barrage of headlines about legislation that restricts their rights, such as joining sports teams, accessing healthcare, or even using the bathroom.
Following Jamie’s introduction, President Biden remarked on how “comfortable” the teenager appeared at the podium. “Your story, your leadership, and your mom are truly inspiring,” he said.
Biden emphasized the contrast between his administration and the previous one, declaring, “Pride is back at the White House.” He called transgender youth “among the bravest people in the world,” affirming that being authentically oneself requires immense courage, especially in the face of discrimination.
Transportation Secretary Alex Johnson, the first openly LGBTQ+ Cabinet member, also spoke at the event, telling Rivera, “Many of us have your back, starting from the top.” He expressed gratitude to his partner for helping others feel a sense of belonging and possibility. Johnson reflected on his own experiences, revealing that he grew up knowing that being LGBTQ could jeopardize his career or even his life. “Today, we stand here in the East Room with the president of the United States and the First Lady, celebrating Pride together,” he shared.
