Conducted between April 23 and May 7, the survey included over 19,000 individuals aged 16 to 74 across 27 countries. It not only examined gender identity and sexual orientation but also the level of exposure to LGBT+ individuals and their communities worldwide. For instance, in the U.S., 57% of respondents reported having a friend, relative, or coworker who identifies as gay or lesbian, while in Brazil, the figure was 66%. Conversely, in Japan and South Korea, it dropped to just 7%.
Breaking it down further by country, 2.9% of participants in Sweden identified as gender minorities, while Germany and Argentina reported 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively. In India, 17% identified as non-heterosexual, with Brazil and Spain following closely at 15% and 12%.
“The trends we observe in the U.S. are certainly not isolated to that region,” Thompson adds. The survey also explored various topics, including attitudes towards equality, anti-discrimination laws, adoption rights, and marriage equality.
