From The Confessional: If You Feel Stuck in a Red State (or County), You’re Not Alone

Before 2016, many of us who lean left could engage in productive discussions with those on the right. I certainly could. Back then, before divisive rhetoric and a disregard for ethics became the norm, I found common ground with conservatives. I understood their perspectives, even if we didn’t always agree.

But things have dramatically changed, largely due to the Republican Party’s unwavering allegiance to a figure who embodies authoritarianism. Family ties have frayed, friendships have dissolved, and conflict has become commonplace. It’s become so distressing that many of us have reached a breaking point with loved ones who cling to harmful beliefs—whether those stem from QAnon, Trump, or Fox News. We hold onto hope that they will break free from these delusions, but until that happens, we no longer have space in our lives for hate, racism, or homophobia.

It troubles me how many of my conservative friends and family members believe that a higher power put Donald Trump in office, yet dismiss the same notion for Joe Biden. It’s selective faith at its finest.

Confessionals

Confessional #25830918: My ultra-religious in-laws have started to exclude my partner and me from family gatherings, likely because I’m pro-choice and pro-mask. It’s astonishing to witness such intolerance.

Confessional #25822697: I can’t wait for my conservative in-laws to visit our new home and see our Pride flag and BLM sign. If they’re uncomfortable, they can leave. I refuse to cater to their bigotry.

Confessional #25835268: Living in a town dominated by my Republican family makes it tough to find excuses to skip Christmas without alienating everyone. Thanks to the GOP’s greed and power grabs, my family dynamics are strained.

Confessional #25809955: Accepting that my extended family is entrenched in a conservative cult is painful. They’re unwilling to change, so sometimes, you just have to walk away.

There are countless individuals in conservative areas who feel trapped. Towns and entire states can feel isolating for those seeking a more progressive environment. Many of us have experienced the emotional toll of living in a place where outdated views prevail.

As American icon Bob Dylan famously said, “the times they are a-changin.” We can take solace in the growing number of Republicans who are abandoning the hate and corruption associated with their party. Together, we can advocate for leaders who prioritize equal rights, healthcare for all, and the diverse fabric of America.
