Being an Aunt: One of My Greatest Joys

Growing up, my siblings were my closest companions. With a six-year age gap among us, we all welcomed children into our lives in quick succession. While being a mother is my top priority, the experience of being an aunt is a special joy I only recognized after my first nephew was born.

I remember vividly celebrating my second son’s first birthday when my sister-in-law unexpectedly went into labor. It was her first child, so she didn’t realize what was happening until we got a surprise text announcing their son’s arrival. He was the third generation to carry my father’s name, making his birth particularly significant. When I visited them at the hospital, I was overwhelmed with emotion, and tears streamed down my face as I saw my brother holding his newborn. The moment he was placed in my arms, I knew he would forever have a special place in my heart, and I envisioned a future where he and my boys would be the best of friends.

My brothers have four sons and two daughters, all born within a span of nine years, with two of my children nestled in the mix. Our kids are incredibly close, often attending the same school, and we’ve made it a priority to foster their friendships just like we had as kids. They enjoy playdates, sleepovers, and simply hanging out together, allowing me to adopt a different role than that of a traditional mom.

My nieces and nephews love visiting my home, which often resembles a chaotic playground, filled with toys scattered everywhere. This means they can relax and be themselves without worrying about strict manners. A polite “please” or “thank you” is appreciated but not expected. I know they enjoy spending time with me, and that’s all that matters. The first stop at Aunt Lisa’s house is always the giant pantry stocked with kid-friendly snacks, where they can help themselves to Capri Suns and root beer. The rules at my house are simple: it’s all fair game.

One of my nieces even insists on wearing her pajamas when she visits after 3 PM. She claims that I prefer her in pajamas, and if I know she’s coming, I often join in, swapping my clothes for a cozy nightgown and slippers. The beauty of being an aunt is that we can ignore societal norms. If a trip to Target is on the agenda and we’re not in the mood to dress up, Aunt Lisa won’t mind one bit. Just keep this between us, as her mom would be horrified to know she went out in her JoJo Siwa gown.

The kids also adore my minivan, which is a bit of a mess but perfect for enjoying snacks in the back. We often blast music with the windows down, and sometimes I might even indulge in a little rap music with explicit lyrics. Their parents are aware of my taste, so they shouldn’t be surprised that I’m introducing them to artists like Nelly.

When I pick up my nieces and nephews from school, there’s a good chance we’ll stop for ice cream, just because. While mom and dad might only treat them to a cone, Aunt Lisa goes all out with burgers, fries, sodas, and of course, ice cream. I love to joke with them, asking if they have any money and pretending to leave them behind to wash dishes if they say no. And if they think it’s funny to run in front of the car, I’ll honk the horn for a laugh.

I thrive on adventures with my nieces and nephews, taking them to the zoo, nail salons, or even IKEA for breakfast. Having cousins along makes outings even more exciting, especially since they are so close in age. The girls love playing with dolls, painting their nails, and wearing matching swimsuits at the pool. I can’t resist spoiling them with matching bows for their adorable hairstyles.

When birthdays roll around, I strive to find the perfect gift, whether it’s a fun toy or a giant yard sign. Aunt Lisa wants their special day to be unforgettable, showing them just how much they mean to me. I may go a bit overboard at times, but childhood is fleeting, and I want them to feel cherished.

My brothers are invaluable to me, and I can’t imagine life without them and their kids. Being an aunt is one of my greatest joys, allowing me to express my love and care in ways that are different from my role as a mother. While as a parent, I establish boundaries and rules, being an aunt is all about fun and creating lasting memories. I hope my nieces and nephews will look back on their childhood and remember the joy I brought into their lives. And of course, they can indulge in sodas and candy, and maybe even sneak in an R-rated movie when they’re with me. Aunt Lisa never saw a thing…
