A ‘Summer Surprise Bag’ Has Become Our New Summer Tradition

It’s that time of year again when our children—and we—experience a significant transition. After nine months of school, especially with the challenges of a pandemic, moving into summer break is a big adjustment. Regardless of whether your kids were homeschooled, engaged in remote learning, participated in a hybrid model, or attended in-person classes, this year has been a rollercoaster. Let’s take a collective breath of relief that it’s coming to an end—or is nearly over.
This transition leaves parents pondering: what’s next? How do we entertain our kids for the next two and a half months? Meanwhile, our adult lives continue with work, chores, errands, and trying to maintain some semblance of a social life. How can we manage when our kids’ routines have changed so drastically? I have two suggestions for you. First, create a summer to-do list for your children. Trust me, you’ll appreciate having a plan. Second, surprise your kids with a summer gift bag filled with delightful treats to kick off their summer.
You might be thinking, “More money spent on the kids?” Yes, but consider this: you were likely going to spend a lot on your kids throughout the summer anyway—between activities, endless snacks (oh my goodness, the snacks), and fuel for driving them everywhere. Why not bundle up some excitement to welcome them into summer?
Swimwear
If your summer plans involve water activities, your children will need gear. Consider gifting them new swimwear, which can include swimsuits, cover-ups, flip-flops, goggles, beach balls, dive sticks, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Don’t forget safety items like floaties if needed.
Gardening
Or rather, digging! Gardening supplies such as hand shovels, gloves, seeds, and watering cans can provide hours of entertainment for kids who love to get messy and explore nature. My older kids enjoy making floral arrangements, so including gardening scissors and a vase can also be a nice touch.
Books
Our household has a mountain of books, but with four kids, trading among them is easy. Books don’t need to be limited to traditional paperbacks or hardcovers; comic books, graphic novels, and audiobooks can also make excellent gifts. Of course, there’s always your local library, although there may be restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic.
Snacks
Yes, those pesky snacks—often the reason summer budgets take a hit. Pick out your child’s favorite grab-and-go snacks and drinks, perfect for traveling to and from practices or longer road trips. They’re also ideal for quick outings or weekends spent with grandparents.
Craft Supplies
No joke—my kids absolutely adore a fresh stack of cardstock for origami, drawings, and other art projects. Markers, crayons, scissors, tape, paper, pipe cleaners, paint, paintbrushes, googly eyes, glue, and stickers can keep children occupied while you tackle your to-do list. If you’re a parent who incorporates summer learning—no judgment—don’t forget flashcards and workbooks.
Playwear
I have zero patience for meticulously caring for my kids’ clothes. Check what your children need for summer. New, budget-friendly t-shirts and shorts—regardless of how quirky they look—can bring joy to your kids. Once a year, we treat each child to a white t-shirt and a tie-dye kit to celebrate the start of summer.
Outdoor Equipment
Remember the fun we had as kids? Hula hoops, kickballs, sidewalk chalk, and jump ropes could entertain for hours. Encourage outdoor playtime with gear that will keep them busy. Don’t forget to grab a new sprinkler for that classic summer feel!
Kitchen Tools
Believe it or not, kitchen tools can be fun too! Purchase reusable popsicle molds so your kids can create their own frozen treats. These are a hit in my home, especially when we mix fun flavors like chocolate milk and banana slices. Sturdy, reusable water bottles are also a must. If you have multiple kids, consider getting each one a different color to easily identify whose is whose.
Building Toys
Younger kids are fond of wooden blocks, while older kids might enjoy a new LEGO set. Building toys promote creativity, problem-solving, and hours of entertainment. Encourage cooperative and independent building. One of my kids’ favorite activities is a building contest, complete with a timer and silly awards for categories like most colorful or scariest. If you’re in a pinch, they can also use various-sized cardboard boxes from the recycling bin!
Movie Night
Movie nights are always a favorite. Gather up popular theater-style snacks like popcorn, candy, and drinks, and promise your kids a cozy night in front of the screen in their pajamas.
Compiling all your child’s summer essentials and presenting them in a gift bag is a delightful way to usher in the season. Plus, since you were going to buy these items anyway, why not take a moment to relish in being the summer fairy godparent?
