When I was younger, my battle with depression was overwhelming. As I navigated my teenage years, I faced severe trauma that escalated my mental health struggles into debilitating PTSD. Although therapy eventually became a vital part of my recovery as an adult, my path to rediscovering this resource was long and arduous, primarily due to a betrayal I experienced during my youth. My therapist disclosed my personal secrets to my family, shattering my trust in mental health professionals. I often reflect on how much healthier I could have been had I not lost faith in therapy during those formative years. Rebuilding that trust was no small feat, but it was crucial to my well-being.
Growing up in a politically and religiously conservative environment, I felt compelled to conceal my identity as a gay man for fear of severe repercussions. My struggles intensified with the sudden loss of my mother, plunging me into a deep depression and dependency on drugs. In my book, The Kingdom’s Sandcastle, I explore the depths of my despair, the trauma I endured, and the immense societal pressure that suffocated me. This immense burden was too much for my young mind to bear. After a significant incident, my family insisted I see a therapist, but I soon found out that my therapist was relaying my private matters to my uncle’s wife, who had always been antagonistic towards me.
This revelation was devastating. What was meant to be a safe space for healing became a weapon against me. I immediately ceased my therapy sessions, leading to a spiral of increased substance abuse and an unhealthy relationship. During those vulnerable years, when therapy could have made a significant difference, I turned away from it entirely, dismissing the entire field due to my shattered trust. The aftermath of that betrayal left lasting scars that I continue to grapple with.
Regaining trust, especially in the realm of mental health, is a complex journey. My untreated depression and PTSD led to a rapid decline in my mental health, making it a daunting task to mend the deeply rooted damage. The first step toward rebuilding trust in therapy was acknowledging my need for mental health care. For a long time, I was in denial, attempting to push through my struggles and forget my painful past. Unfortunately, I learned that I could never truly outrun my trauma; it was always lurking beneath the surface.
Establishing a supportive network outside of therapy was also vital. Once I recognized the necessity of confronting my past traumas, I began to share my experiences with a few close friends before seeking professional help. While they couldn’t provide the expert care I needed, their support was a crucial first step in validating my struggles. This small group of friends ultimately encouraged me to return to therapy.
With a supportive network in place, I came to understand that not all therapists are the same. One unethical individual does not define the entire profession. This realization was challenging, especially after my prior experience, but my support system and my commitment to improving my mental health worked in tandem to help me overcome this hurdle. Although the process took time, it was essential for my growth, and I am better for it.
Mental health struggles can be overwhelming, but prioritizing self-care is crucial. If you’re facing these challenges alone, know that you are not invisible. Your support network might already be surrounding you, but it’s essential to recognize your own needs and take action. Therapy can be a powerful tool for healing, and I encourage anyone grappling with unhealed emotional wounds to seek it out. If I can rebuild my trust in therapy after such a betrayal, so can you. Don’t hesitate to lean on your support system; they can guide you toward a therapist with whom you feel comfortable. It could be the most beneficial decision you make for your well-being.
