The phrase “nothing tastes as good as thin feels” popped into my head this morning while practicing yoga. As I held the triangle pose, I glanced at my arm and was pleased to see some muscle definition. Yet, my gaze quickly shifted to the sagging skin that comes with age. It’s frustrating how my mind still zeroes in on perceived flaws, even in fleeting moments.
It’s no surprise that this phrase has stuck around. It was a mantra for many, and it angers me that even in my 40s, this notion can creep in uninvited. We were fed a toxic narrative, and unfortunately, our children are facing the same misleading messages, albeit in shinier, more sophisticated forms.
I want to shout that there are countless experiences that taste just as good as thin feels! Enjoying ice cream with your kids on a sweltering summer day, savoring turkey and stuffing at a family gathering, or relishing that first bite of soup after being ill—these moments are rich with joy.
Whoever coined that phrase? A fraud! Life’s flavors far exceed the hollow notion of being thin. What does being thin even offer us? Why have we aspired to shrink ourselves, to diminish our presence? It’s absurd.
Even with the current narrative that “strong is the new skinny,” we still see unrealistic body standards that don’t represent most people. If we’re struggling with these thoughts, what impact does it have on our kids? We must push a more positive message to counter the negativity they encounter daily.
We cannot simply whisper reassurances; we need to be loud and clear about their worth. Let’s reject the harmful labels of “thin” and “fat” and focus on health in a holistic way. Achieving thinness should never come at the cost of our well-being.
Let’s appreciate our bodies for all they do—loving, cooking, dancing, and nurturing. None of this is defined by being thin. We are valuable just as we are, created perfectly in our own unique forms. Let’s celebrate this truth.
