My Son Faces Bullying, But We Refuse to Let the Bullies Succeed

When you cradle your precious newborn, the world seems full of endless possibilities for them. They are the embodiment of perfection, and you eagerly anticipate all the joys life will bring their way. No mother holds her baby and imagines that anyone could ever dislike or mistreat them. But when that reality strikes, it shatters a mother’s heart. I speak from experience.

My son has been dealing with bullying since he turned ten. It all began because of his intelligence—he was quick to answer questions and often raised his hand. While teachers adored him, his peers labeled him a nerd. What started as mild teasing soon escalated into something more hurtful.

Teachers attempted to intervene, gathering the boys in class to ask them to stop. They threatened a meeting with parents if the behavior continued—a hollow warning. The boys’ parents viewed their children as flawless, consistently blaming others for their misbehavior. I remember one incident where a boy kicked a girl, and when confronted, his mother claimed it was the girl’s fault. It’s baffling to witness such a lack of accountability.

At the end of the school year, we relocated, and I was relieved to leave that challenging chapter behind. However, one night, the phone rang, and my son saw a FaceTime call from those boys. He ignored it, but they called 28 more times before he finally picked up. Initially, one boy apologized for his past behavior, which my son appreciated. But soon, the conversation turned sour as they laughed at him and called him names, including a nickname he hated. Frustrated, he yelled, “Leave me alone!” While I usually wouldn’t support such language, that night, I felt the same rage.

With tears in his eyes, he asked, “Why are they so cruel to me? I hate them!” I had no answer. These kids failed to see that he is loved deeply by his family. They were being outright mean, not genuinely apologizing. My son may be a nerd, but he is not foolish. He has feelings, and the hurt they inflict affects us all.

I was furious. I wanted to reach out to their parents to express my feelings, but my son begged me not to escalate things further. “Just let it go,” he pleaded. Yet ignoring it wouldn’t make it disappear. When I see those mothers at the store, I’ll have to act cordial, asking about their summer plans, all while biting my tongue. My mother taught me not to intentionally hurt others, a lesson these kids seem to have missed.

I wish the parents could feel the anguish I’m experiencing. Perhaps then, they would teach their children empathy. I wonder how they would react if their child faced exclusion, or if someone mocked them for something they couldn’t control. Would they remain indifferent if they heard their child sobbing after being bullied? Yet, I don’t genuinely wish that pain upon anyone; no parent should endure such heartache.

A parent’s love is profound, and when someone harms their child, it cuts deeply. When your child looks to you for help, and you feel powerless, it’s heartbreaking.

So, what can I do? I listen. I love. I plan for a brighter future for him. I won’t allow a handful of unkind kids to diminish his self-worth. He is brilliant, kind, and deserving of friendship and happiness. No one can take that away from him.

As a mother, my heart aches for my son. I will strive to raise my children to be better, teaching them the importance of kindness. They need to understand that everyone has their battles, and a simple act of kindness can make a world of difference. I will teach them to respond with grace, even when faced with unkindness.

Unfortunately, unkindness will persist throughout life—whether from coworkers, bosses, or even strangers. But it’s never acceptable to dim someone else’s light. My son will continue to shine brightly, and I will ensure he knows that he is worthy and valued.

We will not allow a few hurtful kids to triumph. He deserves so much more than that.
