In a heartfelt episode of his podcast last year, Dane Roberts revealed that he had experienced a relapse after maintaining sobriety for 16 years. In a recent conversation on another podcast, he discussed why he chose to share this information publicly and why he was transparent with his young daughters, ages 8 and 6, about his struggles.

Roberts explained that his relapse began after he started taking prescription opioids for pain relief following an ATV accident. He quickly found himself taking more than prescribed and seeking additional pills. As someone who had built a strong identity around his sobriety, he grappled with the thought of starting over. “I had constructed this entire persona around having 16 years of sobriety,” he shared.

When he realized the negative impact his addiction was having on his family, he made the decision to seek help and be honest with everyone, including his daughters, whom he affectionately referred to as Lily and Daisy. “They were aware of my relapse. We explained, ‘Daddy was on these pills for his surgery, but then he made some poor choices and sought out more pills,’” he recounted. “We share everything with them.”

Roberts noted that his daughters have been aware of his addiction issues for quite some time, recounting a humorous moment when his then three-year-old Lily asked to accompany him to an AA meeting. When he told her that only alcoholics can attend, she enthusiastically declared, “I’m going to be an alcoholic!”

While discussing such heavy topics with children can be challenging, Roberts emphasized the importance of teaching them that addiction is a disease rather than a moral failing. He believes that seeking treatment for addiction should be viewed similarly to treating diabetes or healing a broken bone. “I carry no shame about it. I’ve felt guilty for many things in my past, but I am not embarrassed,” he stated.

He expressed pride in his daughters when they acknowledge their mistakes and apologize, calling it a courageous act to own up to their shortcomings. By openly discussing his relapse, Roberts hopes to set an example, noting that he now feels an even greater sense of well-being in his recovery than he did during his first 15 years of sobriety. “I feel better now with six months of sobriety than I did at 15 years,” he shared.
