Consider the anguish that Ma’Khia’s family is experiencing right now. Another young Black life has been lost at the hands of law enforcement. Predictably, the police department is already spinning narratives: “This wasn’t racially motivated,” “The officer was scared for his safety,” or “Let’s wait for the full story to emerge.” But what more do we need to know? A 16-year-old Black girl is dead, and it’s not an isolated incident.
The role of police officers is to protect all citizens, regardless of their race, neighborhood, or background. They should be a source of support, not harm. Yet, for many Black communities, the presence of police often signals danger rather than safety. Each time an unarmed Black person is killed, the collective trauma deepens. We should all be outraged that another child has been lost — think of Adam Toledo, Tamir Rice, and Michael Brown.
There are too many officers who seem to act on assumptions based on race, treating individuals as criminals before understanding their stories. The very rules governing police use of force need to be reevaluated.
We don’t know the specifics of what transpired in the moments leading up to Ma’Khia’s death on April 20th. Perhaps she was frightened or attempting to defend herself with a kitchen knife. But what we do know is that the officer shot first, firing four times at a Black girl who was not posing an immediate threat. He had only been on the scene for ten seconds before pulling the trigger.
Imagine if the scenario involved a white teenager in a similar situation. Would the outcome have been the same? Almost certainly not. This stark contrast highlights the reality of systemic racism in our society. While white mass shooters are often taken into custody without incident, Black individuals face lethal consequences for far less.
Between 2015 and 2020, a study revealed staggering racial disparities in police shootings. Out of 5,367 fatal police shootings, 1,265 victims were Black, who were killed at a rate 2.6 times higher than their white counterparts. Yes, gun violence is a significant issue in America, but racism is an even deeper, systemic problem that manifests itself in policing.
It used to be that we feared for Black men, but now, with cases like Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor, the fears extend to Black women and even children. It’s a harsh reality that must change.
What can we do to alter the hearts of racists or the minds of biased officers? Lives have been lost, communities shattered, and yet the cycle continues. Black individuals must navigate life with a constant awareness of the potential dangers that come with their skin color. Each day brings news of another life taken. This is our reality.
Ma’Khia’s death is a wake-up call that must ignite change in those who prioritize race over humanity. She could have been my daughter. Until we see real change, this fear will keep me and countless other Black parents awake at night.
