The Maldives is set to introduce a new initiative to boost its tourism sector by providing COVID-19 vaccinations to travelers who have booked a stay at local hotels. As vaccination efforts continue to accelerate in various regions, including the U.S., many individuals still face challenges in securing appointments. To celebrate their vaccinations, why not consider a stunning getaway to the Maldives?

Introducing the “3v” Program

The island nation is launching its “3v” program, which stands for “visit, vaccinate, and vacation.” According to tourism minister Amir Kadir, this initiative aims to create a more seamless travel experience for guests. Currently, tourists can visit the Maldives by presenting a negative PCR test and proof of hotel accommodation. Kadir has indicated that vaccinated visitors will soon be able to enter the country without restrictions, potentially as early as this week.

Tourism and Vaccination Efforts

Renowned for its idyllic beaches and luxurious overwater bungalows, tourism accounts for 67% of the Maldives’ GDP. To ensure the safety of its tourism industry, the country prioritized vaccinating hospitality workers, with 90% of front-line staff already vaccinated and over half of the population having received at least one vaccine dose.

While Kadir did not specify a timeline for administering vaccines to visitors, he assured that there would be ample supply once all residents have received their doses. Decisions regarding whether travelers will need to cover the cost of their vaccines have yet to be made. “I don’t foresee any supply issues in the Maldives due to our relatively small population,” he stated.

Tourism Goals and Challenges

The Maldives aims to attract 1.5 million tourists this year, but even achieving this goal may leave the country with a deficit in tourism revenue compared to pre-pandemic levels. “Reaching this year’s target would still leave us short of what we need,” Kadir noted. “However, it’s an improvement from our expectations at the end of 2020.”
