Matthew Perry recently offered fans a glimpse into the highly anticipated ‘Friends’ reunion taping. As the iconic ’90s sitcom prepares for its unscripted special, David Schwimmer appeared on The Graham Norton Show, excitingly announcing that filming would commence next week in Los Angeles. Fans have been eagerly sharing snapshots of the set on Twitter, creating buzz around the project.
In a nod to the show’s memorable moments, Schwimmer teased viewers by revealing that we won’t see Ross, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey in their traditional roles. “I’ll be myself. I’ll be David,” he explained, emphasizing that the reunion will feature the cast as their real selves rather than their on-screen personas.
When asked if he had been revisiting the show to prepare, Schwimmer admitted he hadn’t caught up on the 236 episodes, joking, “I guess I need to watch a lot over the next five days.”
Producers and cast members have consistently stated their disinterest in an in-character reunion. “What was at the heart of the show is done,” co-creator Marta Kauffman told Entertainment Weekly back in 2014. “And let’s be honest, it’s 20 years later. Nobody looks like they did then.”
However, Schwimmer did drop a hint about a special segment during filming, saying, “There is one section, I don’t want to give away — where we all read something.”
Co-star Lisa Kudrow echoed Schwimmer’s sentiments on Rob Lowe’s podcast, stating, “It’s not a scripted thing. We’re not portraying our characters. It’s us getting together, which just doesn’t happen a lot.”
Fans were thrilled by behind-the-scenes photos making the rounds this past week, including a now-deleted Instagram post from Perry with a quirky caption about makeup brushes and the joy of reuniting with his co-stars.
Kudrow reassured fans not to read too much into the fact that the cast has not been together until now. “We’re all incredibly grateful… We all loved — and love — each other,” she noted.
Originally scheduled to air in May 2020 to coincide with HBO Max’s launch, the reunion faced numerous delays due to the pandemic. “The truth is, we’ll do it when we all determine it’s safe to do so,” Schwimmer stated in mid-summer 2020.
Filming was postponed indefinitely in August due to rising COVID-19 cases, but the reunion special is set to air later this year on HBO Max.
