From The Confessional: Spare Us the QAnon Nonsense

Conspiracy theories have been around for ages. People have been preparing for everything from zombie apocalypses to alien invasions for years. However, spreading misinformation used to be a challenge; it required physical literature, like books or newspapers, or simply word of mouth. Today, the internet empowers believers to share their unfounded claims faster than one can say “Trump lost, you misguided supporter.” It’s alarming to see respected individuals succumb to the depths of conspiracy theories, seemingly trapped with no way out.

Our family members, neighbors, and even some spouses have fallen for bizarre narratives promoted by online “experts” instead of relying on credible scientific facts. They claim the election was stolen, that celebrities engage in horrific acts, and that COVID-19 is a hoax. The idea of the vaccine terrifies them.

We wish we could help them, but often, the only option is to distance ourselves. Whether you’re mourning a lost friendship because your best friend has spiraled into QAnon fantasies, or you’re relieved that your mother-in-law’s conspiracy beliefs gave you the perfect reason to skip family gatherings, many have felt the impact of these twisted tales.

We can only hope that these “QAnon believers” will see the light, as they constantly urge us to do. Otherwise, humanity might face dire consequences.

I was really excited to catch up with a long-distance friend tonight, but instead, I got a two-hour rant filled with conspiracy theories. So frustrating.

Confessionals

Confessional #25826981: My older brother and I used to be inseparable. After he dove headfirst into COVID conspiracy theories, I haven’t spoken to him in six months. He sends me hurtful messages calling me a “sheep.” It breaks my heart.

Confessional #25826281: My brother was my best friend, but since he became obsessed with crazy conspiracy theories, I had to cut ties. It’s sad how such madness can tear families apart.

Confessional #25824638: My partner and I are on completely different wavelengths now. He’s gone off the deep end with conspiracy theories and turned into the most politically radical person I’ve ever known—he never cared about politics before. I don’t recognize him after 12 years of marriage.

As much as we might joke about these conspiracy theorists, the lies they believe have real consequences. Their descent into these beliefs transforms our relationships, leading to heartbreak.

I secretly appreciate it when my son calls out his dad for his conspiracy nonsense. Last night, my husband started ranting again, and my son said, “Shut up, Dad, you sound ridiculous!” Love that kid!

Confessional #25826720: My friend constantly shares conspiracy-laden YouTube videos and then asks for my thoughts. My response? You’ve got to be kidding.

Confessional #25819353: I wandered into a bakery for a simple treat, only to be ambushed by two anti-mask employees who tried to convince me of a grand conspiracy. I was yelled at for 20 minutes and left without my purchase. Unbelievable!

Confessional #25817643: My husband just revealed he’s a conspiracy theorist. We haven’t gotten along since. He thinks school shootings are staged. I can’t fathom how people think this way.

It’s disheartening to be in the same room as these individuals, who genuinely believe their errant narratives. All we want to say is, “Stop. You’re making no sense.”

My in-laws got vaccinated, but the anti-vaccine aunt is emailing to ask why no one has made Easter plans. Umm, because we don’t want our kids exposed to your risky beliefs. Bye!

Confessional #25826709: My in-laws are grasping onto conspiracy theories and refuse vaccines, despite being high-risk. I feel for my husband, but I’m done with their viewpoints.

Confessional #25826572: My husband’s aunt thinks COVID is fake and won’t get vaccinated. My mother-in-law has told her that only vaccinated adults will be invited to family events. I wish I could see her face when she learns my husband already got his shot.

Confessional #25825191: I’m exhausted by my anti-vaccine, pro-conspiracy friend. Wake up already! I’m so tired of hearing this nonsense; she might actually be losing it.

The chaos of 2020 unearthed the worst of humanity by merging conspiracy theorists with a pandemic, resulting in a wave of anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers. While we masked up and distanced ourselves, Aunt Carol spread ludicrous falsehoods about COVID, which led to her being permanently uninvited from Christmas dinner. Bye, Aunt Carol.

We had to cut off my husband’s aunt due to her extreme conspiracy beliefs regarding COVID and Trump. I won’t have that near my kids.

Confessional #25819312: I can’t look at some friends the same way after their absurd conspiracy posts on social media. Trump lost! Just accept it. Now they’re claiming Biden has dementia and Harris was a call girl. Enough already!

Confessional #25819257: I’m enjoying watching my former friend try to pretend she wasn’t a conspiracy theorist all over social media for the last year and a half.

Confessional #25822523: My husband has become a conspiracy theorist and has taken extreme political stances. I’m progressive. After 20 years of marriage and two kids, we’re now separated. He refuses to wear a mask and shares his beliefs on social media. I can’t keep my kids or myself safe. Why can’t he see it?

This pandemic has altered everything, breaking friendships, marriages, and relationships beyond repair. It’s challenging to view a spouse, sibling, or best friend the same way after they’ve embraced QAnon beliefs or continue to support someone who still whines about losing the election months later.

For better or worse, the past four years and the pandemic have revealed bizarre conspiracy theories that we can’t believe anyone with a functioning brain would endorse, yet here we are. And sadly, we may have to say goodbye as they delve deeper into the rabbit hole of absurdity.

Goodbye, Uncle Pete. We won’t be saving you a seat at Thanksgiving this year.
