Controversial Take: Embracing the Bra Life Around the Clock is Totally Worth It

When I revealed my bra-wearing habits to my friends, their jaws dropped in disbelief. They looked at me with furrowed brows, struggling to comprehend my nonchalant admission. How could I be so open about it? I felt their judgment but was used to it by now. This revelation always catches people off guard. Their only response was a stunned, “Seriously??”

Yes, I wear a bra. All the time. Day and night. Underwire, too. Year-round, no exceptions.

Once they recovered from their initial shock, my friends launched into a passionate discussion about the liberating experience of going braless. They reminisced about the joy of shedding their bras after a long day, relishing the comfort of cozy sweaters without any constraints. “Oh!” they exclaimed, “It’s the best feeling ever!”

To me, that sounded utterly dreadful and filled me with anxiety. I instinctively wrapped my arms around myself.

Since slipping into my first training bra, I’ve known that this garment and I are inseparable. It feels like a second skin—providing comfort, support, and the reassurance that I can run at a moment’s notice without worrying about anything. If a disaster struck, I’d be the one hoarding bras like they were food and water!

As we discussed various bra styles, I raised my hand for every single one. Their eyes widened with realization that I’m somewhat of a rarity in this regard. In an effort to relate, they asked, “What about after a workout? Isn’t it wonderful to take off that sweaty sports bra?” I could see the anticipation in their eyes, but I had to disappoint them.

“I immediately switch back into a regular bra after taking off my sports bra,” I replied, sensing their disbelief as they struggled to digest this information.

With hesitance, they asked, “Even during quarantine, when you weren’t seeing anyone?” I could practically see them brace for impact.

“Basically all 24/7,” I responded.

It was a lot for them to absorb. I could have backpedaled, said “Just kidding!” and laughed it off, but honesty won out. I am a bra enthusiast. My bust has two snug homes in those cups. I’m always strapped in. That’s just who I am.

I fully support anyone who chooses to embrace their braless freedom, but for me, I require the support of a bra to function comfortably. Fortunately, my friends still accept me, even if they find some of my choices perplexing. We laughed it off and moved on.

I think I’ll give them a moment to process my bra obsession before diving into my underwear habits. Oh boy, that one’s going to be a real eye-opener!
