Embracing the New Normal: Lessons from a Year of Change

This morning, my son settled at the piano in his pajamas, bare feet, and a baseball cap, pouring his heart into the music. It’s become a daily ritual for him—one that brings him immense joy.

Just a year ago, he was begging to quit. Getting him to practice felt like an uphill battle. Our days were packed, often frantic, as we rushed to keep up with the demands of a busy family of six. At home, he longed to unwind. The piano felt like just another task on our never-ending to-do list. We were perpetually on the go, often running on empty.

But the relentless pace of life has slowed this past year. Instead, my little one hops onto the piano bench in his PJs, playing before breakfast, during breaks from remote learning, and anytime he passes by. He plays constantly, and without the pressure of our previous hectic schedule, he plays for the sheer joy of it!

As I listen to the notes flowing from the piano, I can’t help but notice how much he has improved. His fingers glide over the keys, and he leans in with passion, truly feeling the music.

The Question Looms: Where Do We Go From Here?

While I yearn to return to pre-COVID life, I also feel hesitant. I hope for the end of the virus, for healing, and for a renewed sense of togetherness. Yet, as I soak in the melodies, I reflect on the frantic pace we lived before.

With the rollout of vaccines and the world inching toward “normal,” this feels like a crucial moment for intention. What have we learned? What do we want to hold onto? What do we want to leave behind? Can we embrace a slower pace once life resumes full swing? Will we become more mindful of our pursuits? What were we even racing towards back then?

The piano keys are telling a story—one that prompts me to contemplate the next chapter. So where do we go from here? And what were we rushing towards before?
