My Son’s Broken Phone Became the Best Day Ever

My youngest, Lucas, is 17 and practically a grown-up at six feet tall. These days, I hardly see him. As a junior in high school, he juggles a job at the local grocery store, drives, works out five times a week, snowboards, fishes, and maintains a busy social life. When he’s not occupied, he’s either sleeping or eating. On the rare occasions I catch a glimpse of him, he might say a few words to me, but there’s no guarantee. He’s like a train speeding away, and I’m just standing on the platform watching him embark on his grand adventure.

While I do feel a pang of sadness, I’m also thrilled and honored to be part of his journey—even if it’s from afar. Lucas is fiercely independent, often expressing a desire to turn 18 and move out. He even considered emancipation, which sent a chill down my spine. Thankfully, he decided to hold off since college is just around the corner.

I miss him. After his older siblings moved on, I still had “the baby.” There’s something about my youngest that makes every little moment feel special. I find myself savoring the simplest interactions, putting aside my to-do list to take it all in. Time slips away when it comes to him.

Lucas needs very little from me these days. He might ask me to schedule a doctor’s appointment or grab some toothpaste, and I happily oblige. But those requests are few and far between.

Last week, his phone broke, and I felt as if I’d hit the jackpot. He was frustrated about having to pay for repairs again, but I reminded him we had insurance. He needed the account holder to accompany him, and guess who that was? Me! It was my lucky day; he had no choice but to spend time with me.

We arrived at the carrier store only to find a long line, and the new employee couldn’t assist us. It seemed I’d struck gold again. We had to return another day. After 30 minutes in the car and an hour at the store, we listened to his playlist, chatted about his siblings, and he even shared stories from his job. We connected in a way that had been missing lately—all thanks to a broken phone.

But my luck didn’t stop there. We were directed to a third-party repair shop, which meant another 30-minute drive. More time spent together, more music (this time, my playlist), and more meaningful conversations. I cherished every moment.

Once we parked and waited in line again, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this time with him. The wait was over an hour, and he was visibly annoyed. In a different situation, I would have been too, but I would’ve waited much longer just to hang out with him. We settled into chairs nearby, where I shared a cherished photo from his 4th birthday at Disneyland. We reminisced and laughed, scrolling through old pictures on my phone.

Just as we were lost in our memories, our name was called. It was time to get the phone repaired. I realized our moment together was coming to an end. We signed the paperwork, and I thought I had hit the jackpot again—two more hours with my favorite 17-year-old!

But then came the unexpected twist: “Mom, I’ll drop you off at home. Thanks for your help. I’ll pick up my phone later.” And just like that, it was over. I fought the urge to remind him to buy a protective case for his phone. Perhaps I’d get lucky again someday.

Who would have thought a malfunctioning phone could bring a mother and her son closer? Sometimes, it takes something broken to create connections that last.
