A mother from Pennsylvania is facing serious allegations for reportedly creating digitally manipulated images and videos of her teenage daughter’s cheerleading competitors, known as the Victory Vipers. Over the summer, Raffaela Spone allegedly sent these altered materials, which included fake nude images and clips showing the girls drinking and smoking, to both the rivals and their parents, as well as the gym’s owners.
Spone is charged with three misdemeanor counts of cyber harassment of a child and three counts of harassment. The accusations claim she utilized deepfake technology to create the inappropriate content and even sent a threatening message to one of the girls, saying she should take her own life. According to Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub, the accessibility and ease of use of this technology make it particularly concerning. “Your neighbor down the street can use it, and that’s very scary,” he stated.
Spone’s lawyer, Robert Birch, has denied the allegations against her, asserting that they plan to review the evidence thoroughly, cross-examine witnesses, and mount a vigorous defense. He also mentioned that both Spone and her daughter are currently facing death threats.
The situation came to light when a parent of one of the affected teens reported harassment to the Hilltown Township Police Department. The complaint detailed that the teen was receiving threatening calls and texts from an unknown number, including messages telling her to “kill yourself.” One of the altered videos allegedly portrayed the girl vaping, which could have led to her removal from the cheer team.
Following this, additional parents stepped forward with similar complaints about harassment directed at their daughters. In one case, a parent shared that their child was depicted in messages as engaging in substance use and had an inappropriate online username.
After conducting multiple investigations, police traced the phone numbers back to Spone’s IP address. A search warrant executed at her home resulted in the seizure of several electronic devices, with further analysis revealing that some messages matched the dates when the victims received their harassing messages. Spone was arrested and released on the condition that she appears for a preliminary hearing on March 30.
