In a recent interview with Time, actor Elliot Page expressed his excitement about returning to acting following his transition. Reflecting on his childhood, Page shared that he always felt like a boy but felt pressured to conform to a more feminine image in the entertainment industry, which he entered at the age of 10. Three months after publicly coming out as transgender, Page is eager to embrace his authentic self in his career and utilize his platform to advocate for the transgender community.

Page revealed that he considered stepping away from acting due to the expectations that demanded he appear more feminine, both on-screen and at public events. Now, as a star of Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, he looks forward to the new direction of his career. “I’m really excited to act, now that I’m fully who I am, in this body,” he shared with Time. “No matter the challenges and difficult moments of this, nothing amounts to getting to feel how I feel now.”

The Academy Award-nominated actor, known for roles in films like Juno and Inception, made headlines last December when he came out as transgender in a heartfelt Instagram post. “Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life,” he wrote.

Since coming out, Page has received numerous offers from casting directors eager to work with him. Currently, he is in Toronto filming the third season of Umbrella Academy. Page anticipated both support and backlash from the public regarding his announcement, stating, “What I was anticipating was a lot of support and love and a massive amount of hatred and transphobia. That’s essentially what happened.”

While he has remained relatively quiet on social media since his announcement, Page is now determined to use his privilege to advocate for the transgender community, emphasizing that many are facing misinformation and discrimination. “Extremely influential people are spreading these myths and damaging rhetoric,” he noted. “Every day you’re seeing our existence debated. Transgender people are so very real.”

Reflecting on his own experiences, Page recounted asking his mother if he could “be [a boy] someday,” and he highlighted the injustice of being removed from a boys’ soccer team as a child. He acknowledged the internal struggles he faced throughout his career due to the disconnect between his identity and the roles he portrayed.

Now that he has embraced his true self, Page is committed to supporting the fight for transgender rights and visibility. “My privilege has allowed me to have resources to get through and to be where I am today, and of course I want to use that privilege and platform to help in the ways I can,” he stated.
