During a late-night scroll through Facebook, I stumbled upon the name Candace Owens. Understanding who she is has become crucial; her rhetoric is harmful to everyone, regardless of race or social status. And it’s especially concerning because she has ambitions of running for president in 2024.
At first glance, Candace seems like a stunning Black woman with determination in her eyes. However, once she begins to speak, ignorance spills out. Her Twitter account is a prime example of this—just a quick visit could leave you questioning your own intelligence.
Her Wikipedia page might make you cringe before you finish the first line. Identified as a Conservative author, commentator, and activist, the term activist typically refers to someone advocating for political or social change. However, if you pay attention to her statements or read her tweets (along with the comments from her supporters), you might be concerned about the type of “change” she’s promoting.
Some of her most shocking statements emerged in a Facebook video I watched a few months back, which was unfortunately endorsed by some friends of mine. These remarks came just days after George Floyd’s tragic murder. Owens claimed, “There was immense pressure for me to align with the popular opinion about who George Floyd was… We are being sold a lot of lies that harm the Black community, the white community, and America as a whole. Our culture is distinct; we’re the only community that supports the lowest elements of our society. Not every Black American is a criminal. But we uniquely fight and scream for those in our community who are not up to good.”
Every word deserves a dramatic eye-roll. I’d certainly classify Candace as a Black American who is not acting in good faith.
It’s alarming that Owens is considering a presidential run in 2024. She has recognized how easily many Americans can be swayed by her words. Republicans appreciate her because she can be tokenized as one of the few Black individuals reinforcing their narrative.
Owens professes love for America while simultaneously disparaging the very people who built its foundation. Her reckless speech patterns reveal a deep-seated disdain for Black individuals. This animosity seems to fuel the chaos we’ve witnessed over the past four years with Donald Trump. Her belief that she can lead a divided nation like ours highlights her disconnection from reality, as illustrated by Fabiola Cineas in Philadelphia Magazine—who pointed out her views on white nationalism, gender identity, and Black Democrats.
Owens doesn’t present herself as someone who genuinely loves her country; if she did, she would unite rather than divide. She wouldn’t seek to reignite the flames that Trump started. I wouldn’t trust Trump with my life, and I would certainly never trust Candace. It’s time for the American public to wake up—haven’t we been misled enough? Let’s be clear: Candace Owens is not the solution for the White House in 2024, 2028, or beyond. Just imagine her in discussions with foreign leaders or what she’d present to the WHO—it’s a frightening thought! Candace is undermining the platform she occupies, which is already quite weak.
Candace Owens needs to take a good look in the mirror; being a Black woman is immutable, and having a white husband doesn’t alter that fact. Her polished appearance and knack for pushing the right buttons to appease the Republican party and her Conservative followers don’t guarantee her nomination as the Republican presidential candidate. Let’s hope that the Republican party has learned from the damaging effects of extreme and divisive rhetoric, especially after the Capitol Riots on January 6. People with common sense understand that words can either uplift or destroy, and hers certainly only do harm. Candace Owens will never receive my vote, and I hope she doesn’t get anyone else’s either.
