Why I Choose To Keep Ad-Tracking On Social Media

In today’s world, where internet privacy is a hot topic, many of my social media friends often remind us about the potential risks of sharing our online behaviors with major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. They urge us to tighten our privacy settings, clear our cookies, and even delete apps that might be eavesdropping on us.

I completely understand the importance of safeguarding our personal data. Why should large corporations profit from collecting, storing, and selling my information? Is my data lumped together with everyone else’s, or is there a detailed file on me based on my online searches—like my curious inquiries about unique products or unusual topics that could create a vivid (and somewhat accurate) picture of who I am?

Despite these valid concerns, I choose to keep ad-tracking enabled.

And yes, I realize this might sound a bit superficial, but honestly, how else will I discover what to buy? I love a well-targeted ad that knows exactly what I might want to splurge on. (Sure, I contribute financially to our family, but there’s something amusing about imagining my spending coming from my partner’s earnings instead of my own. I won’t delve into what that says about me!)

Without these apps monitoring my online activities, how would I know what’s out there? I’m not particularly trendy, and I shy away from following Instagram fashion influencers who often leave me feeling inadequate. Plus, I can’t wander through my favorite stores anymore (don’t judge me for enjoying Target’s affordable style!).

Let’s face it: they’re going to advertise to me regardless. So why not make it relevant and tailored to my interests?

From skincare to clothing and home goods—most of my favorite purchases have come from Facebook and Instagram ads. The best part? As soon as I buy something, I’m immediately inundated with more related products! They follow me from one platform to another and even to various websites I visit. How convenient is that?

If I’m eyeing a kimono-style dress, they already know. Interested in oversized fashion? Here are more options! Do I adore K-pop jewelry? You bet! Am I into South Korean skincare? Absolutely! Do I want quirky home decor, like pillows shaped like corgi butts? Yes, yes, YES!

It’s all so effortlessly fun! Sure, not every product matches the description perfectly, but I’d say 85% of the time, it’s spot on. (Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but I tend to forget the bad experiences.)

The cherry on top? When I share photos of my finds on social media, I get compliments! Who doesn’t love a little validation? I appreciate all the kind words, even if they’re not always genuine. At this stage in life, I’m all about celebrating my decisions.

I even went so far as to pierce more holes in my ears to take full advantage of accessorizing—because if online shopping isn’t about filling those gaps, what is it really for?
