While scrolling through my Facebook feed the other day, I came across a video a friend shared featuring her adorable little one. It grabbed my attention because there was a bright pink stuffed flamingo that looked like it was about to hurl. Its neck was flailing around in a bizarre, grunty manner. My friend’s toddler was giggling and squirming with excitement as they watched this strange spectacle unfold.
But hold on … was it really dancing? No … dear heavens, was that … a toilet? Yes, it was indeed a toilet. This vibrant pink flamingo was perched on a tiny plastic toilet, preparing to do its business. Okay, I’m on board with a flamingo pretending to poop. That’s cute. But WAIT. Was something actually coming out of that creature’s backside?! As I watched in a mix of horror and fascination, a beige, gooey substance began to ooze from the flamingo’s rear and into the clear mini toilet, which I only then noticed was designed for optimal viewing of this gooey expulsion. The flamingo did it! “He’s poopin!!” my friend’s toddler squeaked for the camera, absolutely thrilled.
My kids are 14 and 11 now, well beyond the days of potty training. Without the magic of this astonishing pooping flamingo — which I discovered through a quick Google search is named the “Little Live Gotta Go Flamingo” and was apparently a sought-after toy for Christmas 2020? — I had to resort to bribing my kids with M&Ms to get them to use the toilet. This pooping flamingo is a million times better, and I can’t help but feel a bit envious that parents today have this tool at their disposal. I have no doubt that my son, who was tough to potty train, would have been all in on watching this ridiculous toy do its thing. But, alas, I had to make do with whatever incentives I could find. Parents these days can potty train their kids with actual pooping flamingos! What a time to be alive.
Can you imagine how the folks at Moose Toys — the creators of Little Live Pets — came up with this concept? I imagine a group of professionals sitting around a sleek boardroom table in their fancy Melbourne headquarters, discussing which animal would entertain children most by sitting on a toilet and letting it all out. “How about a koala? They’re adorable no matter what.”
“That’s the issue. We need something silly.”
“Good point. What about a sloth?”
“Nah, that would take too long. Kids would lose interest.” The room pauses as everyone contemplates.
“A turtle?”
“The shell would be a problem.”
“True. I know! How about a flamingo? We can make its neck do quirky things while it… you know.”
“Exactly! Plus, we won’t have to figure out arms.” The room bursts into applause as someone scribbles notes furiously. High-fives all around.
Okay, that’s probably not how these brainstorming sessions go, but let me dream. The world feels overwhelmingly grim at times, and we all need a little joy.
Of course, the Little Live Gotta Go Flamingo isn’t the first pooping toy for kids. Fur Real released a dog and cat that each drop little turds while your child walks them. “Everyone Poops” is a classic children’s book from 1993 that normalizes going number two. Yet, the Gotta Go Flamingo is the first I’ve seen that uses a clear toilet to explicitly showcase the process of poop being expelled. Bravo, Moose Toys, you trailblazing oddballs.
To be clear, I’m all in for this quirky little toy. I’m genuinely envious that today’s parents with potty-training toddlers can leverage this amusing flamingo to make the process a bit smoother. Sure, my kids are long past the potty-training phase, but I might just invest in a pooping flamingo for myself because it’s that delightful. Perhaps I’ll display it proudly alongside my grandma’s china.
My social media feed often feels like a doomsday scroll, but take heart: we have pooping flamingos. This bizarre, grunting, shitting flamingo popping up was a strange yet welcome reminder that there are still bright spots to cling to — a reminder that silliness remains possible, and perhaps even essential, amidst the serious stuff.
