Inclusive Water Park: A Safe Haven for Children with Disabilities

Morgan’s Inspiration Island in San Antonio is the world’s first inclusive water park, revolutionizing the way we think about summer fun. While many water parks offer a refreshing escape during the scorching summer months, parents of children with disabilities often face a harsh reality: most parks are far from accessible. That’s why this innovative water park is garnering so much attention—it was specifically designed to ensure that every child, regardless of ability, can partake in the joy of splashing around.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island officially opened its gates in San Antonio, Texas, and excitement is palpable. This water park is an extension of Morgan’s Wonderland, a theme park dedicated to being inclusive for all visitors, especially those with disabilities. Like its predecessor, every section of the splash park is wheelchair-accessible, and admission for guests with disabilities is complimentary.

“Just like Morgan’s Wonderland, Morgan’s Inspiration Island is not merely a park for those with special needs; it’s a park that embraces inclusion,” explained co-founder of Morgan’s, Thomas Blake. “Both parks were created with the unique needs of individuals in mind, but are meant to be enjoyed by everyone.”

Unlike your average $17 million amusement park, the commitment to inclusivity at Inspiration Island extends well beyond wheelchair access. The park features groundbreaking amenities such as fast passes for guests who may have difficulty waiting in line, private areas for transferring between wheelchairs (for instance, moving from a regular to a waterproof wheelchair), RFID wristbands that help track wandering children, and quiet zones for individuals who may feel overwhelmed by large crowds and loud noises.

Moreover, the park is equipped to quickly adjust water temperatures for those who are sensitive to cold. “Children and adults with special needs often find themselves excluded, not by choice, but due to a lack of adequate facilities,” Blake emphasized.

The visionaries behind Inspiration Island consulted with water park experts, medical professionals, and special education specialists. They also sought input from local educators, parents, and caregivers. In collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, they designed air-powered, waterproof wheelchairs that run without batteries—making them lighter and longer-lasting. Guests can borrow these chairs at no cost, enhancing the park’s accessibility.

It’s clear that parks like this should set the standard across the industry. Creating such inclusive experiences merely requires creative thinking and minor adjustments. It also took two dedicated parents, who have experienced the challenges of inclusivity in society, to bring this vision to life. Thomas and Lisa Blake’s daughter, Emily, who is now 23, has faced physical and cognitive challenges throughout her life. The couple was motivated by her desire to engage in activities that often left her feeling excluded.

The Blakes launched Morgan’s Wonderland in 2010, which initially included a small water play area called Water Works. This concept ultimately inspired the development of Inspiration Island. “What we’ve witnessed proves it can work,” Blake stated. “We’ve seen children with severe special needs playing alongside their peers in a water setting.”

This park encompasses more than just water play; it fosters an environment where children—both with and without disabilities—can come together to have fun, learn from one another, and build understanding. We wish that every kid’s attraction operated with this level of inclusivity. While Blake does not plan to franchise, he aspires to motivate others to adopt similar designs. “Our hope is that more parks will make these adaptations. Most parks cater to 90% of the population, leaving 10% behind due to special needs. There’s no reason for parks to exclude anyone.”

In addition to its inclusive design, Morgan’s is a nonprofit organization. The park operates at half capacity to avoid overwhelming guests, and once again, special needs visitors enjoy free admission. “This work is the most rewarding experience I could imagine,” Blake expressed. “It’s not about the money; it’s about something greater. I wake up excited to contribute, not feeling tired for work.”
