Capitol Officer Eugene Goodman, known for his courageous actions during the January 6th Capitol riot when he redirected the mob away from the Senate chamber, was recently appointed as the acting deputy Sergeant at Arms for the Senate. On Inauguration Day 2021, he had the honor of escorting Kamala Harris.

As reported by The New York Times, Goodman received a warm welcome as he stepped onto the Capitol steps, where he later guided Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, to the Inauguration ceremony. This event marked a historic moment as Harris was sworn in as the 46th Vice President of the United States, becoming the first woman and woman of color to hold this prestigious position.

According to CBS News, Goodman’s promotion to acting deputy Sergeant at Arms came after the resignation of the former Sergeant at Arms following the January 6th events. A permanent replacement has yet to be appointed.

Goodman’s year has certainly been eventful; just weeks prior, he risked his life to protect lawmakers during the violent insurrection. He used his own body as a decoy, drawing a crowd of insurrectionists away from the Senate chambers, which likely saved many lives. Footage from that day shows Goodman being pursued by a mob leader clad in a QAnon shirt, who was so fixated on Goodman that he overlooked the entrance to the Senate chambers. Thanks to Goodman’s quick thinking, lawmakers were able to evacuate in time. He ultimately led the mob into a group of police officers, and the mob leader was later apprehended by the FBI.

Several lawmakers have proposed legislation to award Officer Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal for his bravery. “The United States Capitol was under attack by armed, violent extremists, and Officer Eugene Goodman was the only thing standing between the mob and the United States Senate,” stated Republican Rep. Charlie Crist from Florida. “I can only imagine the potential consequences had it not been for Officer Goodman’s quick thinking and dedication to his duty.”

Goodman has yet to publicly comment on the Capitol attack. A veteran of the Army who served in Iraq, he has been with the Capitol Police since 2009. He truly deserves every accolade and promotion available. What a remarkable individual.
