Thanks to Goodman’s quick thinking, lawmakers were able to evacuate in time. He ultimately led the mob into a group of police officers, and the mob leader was later apprehended by the FBI.
Several lawmakers have proposed legislation to award Officer Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal for his bravery. “The United States Capitol was under attack by armed, violent extremists, and Officer Eugene Goodman was the only thing standing between the mob and the United States Senate,” stated Republican Rep. Charlie Crist from Florida. “I can only imagine the potential consequences had it not been for Officer Goodman’s quick thinking and dedication to his duty.”
Goodman has yet to publicly comment on the Capitol attack. A veteran of the Army who served in Iraq, he has been with the Capitol Police since 2009. He truly deserves every accolade and promotion available. What a remarkable individual.
